MAROA -- Barbara Heinz Brown, 89, February 19, in Tucson, AZ. She was born on a farm near Maroa, IL and graduated from Argenta High School and the University of Illlinois. She began her teaching career at Fair Play School, a one-room school built by her grandfather and attended by her mother and herself. In 1953, she moved to Tucson, Arizona where she taught intermediate school for TUSD. Barb met and married Donald F. Brown in 1957, a civilian employee at Davis Monthan Air Force Base. After retiring in 1988, she kept her love of learning alive by becoming an adult literacy volunteer. Barbara was spunky, had a fantastic sense of humor, and was always up for an adventure with the Bridge Ladies. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, working all the puzzles in the newspaper, and watching the British programs on TV. A firm believer in supporting the local race track, she rented her table at Rillito Race Track for over 20 years and thoroughly enjoyed programming the horses, betting, and watching them run! We loved her dearly and will miss her always. She is preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents, Eric and Elizabeth Heinz; aunt, Mrs. Ruth Glosser; sister, Betty Oliver; and nephew, James E. Oliver. Surviving relatives include: her son, Eric; daughter, Linda (Brad) Argue; grandchildren, Tyler and Kailey Argue and Jayme Brown; and nephew, John Oliver.

James Edwin “Sonny” Hartman, 87, well known area farmer of Monticello, passed away at 4:40 p.m., Monday, Feb 22, 2016 at Kirby Medical Center in Monticello. James was born April 14, 1928 in Douglas County, the son of Frank Joseph and Bertha Kleiss Hartman. James graduated from Tuscola High School in 1947. An Okaw Valley all-conference tackle, he was offered a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, but remained helping out on the family farm per his father’s wishes. He served as a sergeant first class in the United States Army, fighting in the Korean Conflict in 1952/53, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Returning from the war, he met & soon married Norma Jeane Hall at Forty Martyrs Catholic Church in Tuscola on November 27, 1954. They raised two sons, Jay & Van, and farmed and raised livestock southwest of Monticello until he retired at age 85. James was a lifetime member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Bement. He served for many years on the board of Monticello Grain including several years as president. He was also a director/chairman of the Federal Land Bank & Federal Land Credit Association from 1967 to 1994, and served two years as a director of the Piatt County Soil & Water Conservation District. A lifetime die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, he took his family to many games every year, and was fortunate to see Ken Holtzman’s no-hitter in 1969. James was also a huge Fighting Illini fan and could be found many a morning at Hardee’s drinking coffee and swapping jokes with his friends, “The Old Geezers.”

James is survived by his wife of 61 years Norma of Monticello, sons Jay (Renee’) of Decatur, Van (Carol) of Savoy; two sisters: Catherine McCumber, and Barbara Cannon of Urbana; one grandchild: Allie Hartman of Savoy; and many nieces, nephews & cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Mary Catherine Hartman, Virginia Bailey & Dorothy Parker; brother: Charles Hartman, and nephew: Wesley Redden.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the St. Philomena’s Catholic Church, 1301 N. Market St. Monticello, Illinois with Father Bruce Lopez officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday February 26, 2016 at the Mackey Wright Funeral Home, 215 E. She later worked at the Dr. John Warner Hospital in Clinton, IL for 14 years as a Registered Nurse. Mary Kathryn was a member of the Mahomet American Legion Auxiliary and the Champaign County Home Extension Club. She was very active in 4-H activities and the Mahomet United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed ballroom dancing, golfing, gardening and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Arthur was born on September 9, 1930 the son of Arthur C. and Virginia A. (Caldwell) Irwin Sr. He had worked as a farmer.

Russel D. Craig, 72, of Waynesville, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Friday (Feb. 12, 2016) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, surrounded by his loving family.

His funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta. The Rev. Becky Barrow will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta.

Russel Dale Craig was born Nov. 12, 1943, in Normal, the son of Fred A. and Hazel I. Pleines Craig. He married Rose Anne Fox on Aug. 12, 1967, in Lincoln. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Susan (Greg Kleen) Craig, El Paso, and Beth Craig, Waynesville; one sister: Carol (Steve) LaDew, Waynesville; two brothers, Wayne (Judy) Craig, California, and Kenny Craig, McLean; and one grandson, Nolan Yochum.

Russel was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alan Craig.

Russel was a 1961 graduate of McLean-Waynesville High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1971. Russel retired from Caterpillar Inc. in Decatur in 1993. He was a member of Waynesville American Legion Post 1189, Waynesville United Methodist Church and United Automobile Workers Local 751.

Marie June Karr, 86, of Cleveland, Tenn., and a lifelong resident of Wapella, passed away Monday morning (Feb. 8, 2016) in Cleveland in a local health care facility, surrounded by family.

She moved to Cleveland, where she resided with her daughter. Marie was a twin daughter, born to John and Iva Stone Leggett. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin W. Karr, whom she married on Oct. 27, 1950; her granddaughter, Amber Taylor; her grandson, Rhet Campbell; her twin sister, Jane Thorp; and another sister, Jean Cusey.

Marie was a graduate of Wapella High School and attended Illinois State University. She worked in a nursing home as a cook before her retirement. She and her husband farmed for many years near Wapella. After farming, Marie assisted her husband as a rural meter reader for Corn Belt Electric for many years. She enjoyed her flower gardening, drinking coffee and working crossword puzzles. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and a fan of the Fighting Illini basketball team. Marie cared for several of her grandchildren as a daily babysitter. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include her daughter, Sara Campbell; her husband, Kyle, of Cleveland, Tenn.; her sons, Richard (Jodi) Karr and Grant (Taresa) Karr, all of Clinton; Brad (Kim) Karr, Wapella; her 17 grandchildren: five granddaughters, Jennifer, Lynn, Lori, Staci and Tess, and 12 grandsons, Jason Mathew, Jason Dale, Jeremy, Kristopher, Scott, John, Brandon, David, Tyler, Neil, Logan and Payton; 10 great-grandchildren, Adam, Alex, Kelsey, Isaac, Blake, Mackenzie, Katie, Brady, Ray and Konnor; and her special canine companions, Honey and Sugar.

A celebration of life service for her family will be at a later time in Illinois. Frederick R. “Fred” Albright, 76, of Clinton, formerly of Bloomington, went to his forever home at 7 p.m. Monday (Feb. 8, 2016) at his residence.

Fred was born Oct. 9, 1939, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Herman George and Mary Francis Kinder Albright. They preceded him in death. He also is preceded in death by two brothers, Herman and Randall, and one sister, Betty.

He married Nancy Branson on Sept. 2, 1964, in Bedford, Ky. She survives. Also surviving are his children, Lori Albright, Bloomington; Terry (Ron) Hornsby, El Paso; Scott (Melissa) Albright, Geneva; and Fred (Jennifer) Albright Jr., Bloomington; 10 grandchildren, Justin, Taylor, Olivia, Isaac, Kailey, Alyssa, Jaiden, Anthony, Connor and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Liam; one sister, Jenny (Alan) Knoebel, Indianapolis; and one sister-in-law, Barb Albright, Indianapolis.

Fred worked as a self-employed contractor for more than 35 years in the Bloomington-Normal area. He made friends, with his customers who referred to him as “Freddie Fix-it,” and they knew he was only a phone call away. He was an avid Notre Dame sports fan and a lover of his pets and classic cars.

Richard E. Brelsfoard, 71, of Maroa, passed away Tuesday morning, February 9, 2016, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Richard was born December 17, 1944, in Decatur, to Homer and Nina Maxine (Miller) Brelsfoard. He married Nancy L. Anderson on March 21, 1965 in Decatur. Richard was a lifelong farmer and drove a semi truck for 12 years for Briggs Enterprises, Inc. in Argenta. He was a member of Warrensburg Gun Club. He loved trap shooting and hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy; two sons, Troy (Kathy) Brelsfoard of Decatur and Todd (Karrie) Brelsfoard of Maroa; three grandchildren, Tim, Mike and Ashley; one sister, Barbara Anderson of Argenta; two brothers, Gary (Sharon) Brelsfoard of Maroa and Stanley (Marcia) Brelsfoard of Decatur.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Larry Anderson.

Bill worked for the city of Clinton for 52 years. He enjoyed racing and old hot rod cars, especially working on his 1937 Chevy Coupe. Chubbs was born April 3, 1979 in Decatur, IL the son of Patricia Whitehouse. He married Michelle Dawn Mayfield, April 4, 1999 in Clinton, IL.

Chubbs was a loving dad. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars and driving semi-trucks.

Christopher Conrad Striegel, 35, of Monticello, passed away at 12:53 a.m., February 2, 2016 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Christopher was born on December 3, 1980 in Urbana the son of Michael and Kristin (Grove) Striegel.

Chris is survived by his fiancé, Wendi Hendricks of Monticello; mother, Kristin (Terry) Dubson of Monticello; father, Michael (Patti) Striegel of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; brothers, Timothy (Erin) Striegel of Beaverton, OR and Patrick (Whitney) Striegel of Tolono; grandparents, Jack Grove of Monticello, Charlie and Juanita Striegel of Monticello; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Phyllis Grove and Alice Striegel.

Chris was a union electrician employed with Bodine Electric and was a member of the I.B.E.W. #601. Chris enjoyed hunting, fishing, and having his beloved dog Bailey by his side. Chris loved all sports, especially football, and was a fitness enthusiast who enjoyed such events as outdoor obstacle course challenges, the Spartan Race, and the Kirby Derby.

A visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Crossroads Church 1602 N. 1125 East Rd. Monticello, IL 61856. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the Crossroads Church. Interment will be held in Monticello Township Cemetery.

Dennis Simmons, 67, of Farmer City, died 8:32 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 2, 2016) at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal.

Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, Urbana. 

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial: Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.

Survivors: brothers, Ron (Andrea) Simmons, Dewey, and Kenny (Ella) Simmons, Champaign; and sister, Marsha (Jerry Johnson) Ward, Champaign.

Bill C. Stephens, 74, of Farmer City, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 3, 2016) at his home, surrounded by family.

His service will be at noon Saturday at Weldon Baptist Church, Weldon, with the Rev. Clive Shreve officiating and Jim Vance co-officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded, with burial at Greenleaf Cemetery, Farmer City, at a later date.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.

Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home, Pontiac, is in charge of arrangements.

Bill was born Nov. 24, 1941, in Lebanon, Ind., to Levon and Virginia Cripe Stephens. He married Barbara J. Brewer on June 30, 1961. She survives in Farmer City.

Also surviving are his son, William Stephens, Decatur; two daughters, Sandy (Tom) Corcoran, Pontiac, and Kathy White, Farmer City; two brothers, Jim (Joellen) Stephens, Thorntown, Ind., and John Stephens, Lebanon, Ind.; one sister, Carolyn (Dan) Hedrick, Crawfordsville, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bill retired from Deluxe Check Printers in June 1993 after 31 years. He was an active member of Weldon Baptist Church, Weldon. Bill spent most of his retired life woodworking and gardening. He always enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren and attending their activities. He also enjoyed camping and fishing.

Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed.

M. Jean Redman 77 of Maroa, IL passed away 5:18 PM February 3, 2016 at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, IL.

No Services are planned at this time as per Jean’s request.

Jean was born September 24, 1938 in Pana, Illinois, the daughter of William and Mary (Waddington) Carlock. She married William A. “Billy R.” Redman November 19, 1960 in Pana, IL. He passed away July 24, 2005.

Survivors include her Daughter, Stephanie Jill (Ken) Davis, Mt. Zion, IL, 3 Granddaughters, Morgan, Madison and Maci all from Mt. Zion, IL, Sister Patricia (Loren) Glasscock of Oreana, IL, Brother Greg (Leigh Ann) Carlock of Pana, IL, Brothers-in-law Richard (Mary) Kramer of Decatur, IL and Mert Hunter of  Decatur, IL, and special friend Bob Griffin of Maroa, IL.

She was preceded in death by her Parents and 2 Sisters, Phyllis Hunter and Marjorie Kramer.

Jean retired from the John Warner Bank, Clinton, IL, after 20 years of service as their customer representative. She was a member of the Maroa Christian Church and volunteered at the food pantry in Maroa, IL. Jean was an avid Cardinals fan. Her 3 Granddaughters were the pride and joy of her life.

Sandra Ellen Webb 71 of Clinton, Illinois passed away 5:20 AM February 2, 2016 at Manor Court, Clinton, Il.

Graveside Services will be 10 AM Friday, February 5, 2016 at Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, Il. with J. Kent Hickerson officiating. There will be no visitation. Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, Il. is in charge of arrangements.

Sandra was born May 22, 1944 in Clinton, Illinois the daughter of Clarence R. “Budge” and Minnie (Hott) Webb, Sr.

Survivors include her Brother, Clarence (Judy) Webb, Jr., Clinton, Il., Nephew, Scott (Christy) Webb, Lane, Il., Great-Nephews, Jack & Isaac Webb, Lane, Il., Jordan & Christopher Webb, Clinton, Il; and Great-Nieces, Jordan Lynn Edmond, Clinton, IL and Vanessa Edmond, Lane, IL.

She was preceded in death by her Parents.

Sandra was a member of the Lane Christian Church. She had retired from G.E. Bloomington, Il. as an inspector.
