Dale Adkins of Shelbyville

Dale Adkins, 85, of Shelbyville, died at noon on Friday, October 28, 2011 in his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 31, 2011 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Strasburg with Rev. Steven Becker officiating. Mr. Adkins was born on December 31, 1925 in Lerna, IL, the son of Burt and Gertrude Millage Adkins. He was a farmer and a member of Shelby County Farm Bureau. Dale was also a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Strasburg. He married Emogene R. Kircher on January 26, 1951. Surviving are his wife, Emogene; daughter, Mary Lou Brehmer and husband Gary of Strasburg; brother-in-law, Harold Kircher and wife Nancy of Decatur; sister-in-law, Francis Adkins of Mattoon; two grandsons, Seth Brehmer of Strasburg and Zed Brehmer and wife Brandi of Strasburg; and one great granddaughter, Emma Louise Brehmer. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carroll, Floyd and Ithiel Adkins; and granddaughter, Courtney Brehmer.

David M. Dougherty Sr. of Decatur

David M. Dougherty, Sr., 71, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011. David "Dave" Dougherty Sr. was born November 14, 1939, in Decatur, the son of John R. and Wilma Kathryn (Buzan) Dougherty. He was an active member of St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church. He owned and operated several family businesses including the D&D Shell/Marathon service stations for 50 years, located at Grand & Water, until his retirement in 2007. The 74-year-old family business was his passion and he valued each and every customer. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, boating, and playing cards at the family's lake house in Effingham, IL. He also shared his love of cars with his grandkids; working at the station and teaching them to drive his old cars. Dave married Karen Alsbury September 19, 1959 and she preceded him in death on April 24, 1987. He then married Joan E. Bruner on May 15, 1998 and she survives. Surviving is his wife, Joan; sons: David Jr. (Lori) Dougherty, Jr., Daniel (Kathy) Dougherty and Darryl (Alycia) Dougherty; grandchildren: Gail (Brad) Osborne, David "Michael" Dougherty III, Samantha Dougherty, Dustin Dougherty, Sean Dougherty, Sarah Dougherty and Grayson Dougherty; aunt: Delores Marty; step-children: William (Kim) Bronson and Charles (Tammy) Bronson; step-grandchildren: Aaron Bronson and Zachery Bronson; brothers: Jack (Sylvia) Dougherty and Jim Dougherty; brothers-in-law: Dennis (Eleanor) Alsbury, James Bruner, Robert (Donna) Bruner and John Bruner; sisters-in-law: Kathy (Jim) Alsbury, Sue Bruner, Sonja Kay Ellis and Billie (Kenney) Raleigh; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Virgie was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Marion County, Mo., a daughter of William Edward and Maude Wood Couch.

She married Russell Baker on July 26, 1947, in Monroe City, Mo. He passed away July 17, 1979. She later married David J. Moody on Jan. 18, 1986, in Ellsworth.

She is survived by her husband, David J. Moody, Farmer City; son, Gary (Marsha) Baker, Loveland, Colo.; daughter, Sharon Fitzwater, Clinton; three stepdaughters, Barbara Shoemaker, Griggsville; Wanda (Charles) Rule, Bowling Green, Mo.; and Sharon (James) Arteman, Towanda; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Barbara) Couch, Quincy; and sister, Lacy Watson, Quincy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Marshall Couch; and sister, Violet Watson.

Arnold M. Tammen of Farmer City

FARMER CITY — Arnold M. Tammen, 90, Farmer City, formerly of Fairbury and rural Paxton, died at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 21, 2011) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McDowell Methodist Church, 18156 E 1400 North Road, Pontiac, with the Rev. Donna Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Avoca Cemetery, Fairbury. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton, is handling arrangements. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home in Paxton.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Arnold was born July 11, 1921, at Fulda, Minn., the son of Henry and Margaret Schmidt Tammen. He married Loyce Barrett on Nov. 14, 1948, at Chenoa.

He is survived by three sons, David Tammen and Duane (Diane) Tammen, both of Leesville, S.C.; and Dale (Gina) Tammen, Mansfield; one daughter, Rita (John) Collura, East Long Meadow, Mass.; and one brother, John Tammen, rural Gridley; three grandchildren, Theresa Collura, Michael Collura and Melissa (Paul) Gensic; and one great-grandson, Jacob Gensic.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

Arnold grew up in Flanagan. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer and union construction worker. He later worked as the custodian at Ludlow Grade School. He was a member of the Ludlow American Legion. He loved working in his woodworking shop, playing cards and fishing with his friend, Charlie.

Charles Edward Koch of Bloomington

Charles Edward Koch, 88, Bloomington, died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 19, 2011) at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.

His funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, and at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church, Bloomington, with the Rev. Ric Schneider officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bloomington, where military rites will be accorded by the Bloomington-Normal American Legion Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s School, where all eight of their children attended grade school.

Charlie was born May 17, 1923, in Bloomington, the son of Frank and Mary Salch Koch. He married Anne Marie Kniery on Oct. 1, 1949, at Holy Trinity Church in Bloomington. They were married for 58 years before she died on June 7, 2008.

He is survived by seven daughters, Mary (Jim) Thiel, Margie (Tim) Simmons and Jane (Tom) Harris, all of Bloomington; Christine (Rob) Knight, Normal; and Colleen (Jim) Stokes, Cindy (Joe) Stokes and Teri (Dan) Brady, all of Bloomington; one son, Jim Koch, Bloomington; and a sister, Anna Koch, Normal.

Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, Nancy (Grant) Bellis, Bill Thiel, Michael Thiel, Tom Thiel, Brian Simmons, Angie (Daniel) Brennan, Brett Simmons, Trisha Simmons, Brad Simmons, BreeAnn Koch, Jake Koch, Cristal Rever, Kim (Glen) Johnson, Kathleen Knight, Jenny Stokes, Kristi Stokes, Sean Stokes, Ashley Stokes, Danielle Brady and Tommy Brady; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Otto, Frank, and twins Roland and Raymond; one sister, Dee Devine; and two infant daughters, Nancy and Susie Koch.

Charlie was a graduate of Trinity High School, Bloomington, and the Naval Air Technical Training Center at Navy Pier in Chicago. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Charlie was employed as a laborer for Local 362, Bloomington, and by the State of Illinois, working at Illinois Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s School (ISSCS), Normal. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Bloomington; the Knights of Columbus, Bloomington; and the VFW.

He grew up by the lake at Miller Park where he learned to fish and swim from his older brothers. Later, he and Anne often vacationed at his sisters’ home at Lake of the Ozarks. He liked to fish and hunt, and also played baseball for many years. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and had memorable trips to Wrigley Field.

Charlie was a loving brother, husband, father and grandfather whose greatest pastime was spending time with his family. There are lots of fond memories from family and friends who often gathered at Mill Street. After retirement, he enjoyed preparing Saturday breakfast at Dawes Place for whoever would stop by. 

He was a devout Catholic, who worked hard and taught his children and grandchildren invaluable life lessons. 

The family extends their thanks to the staff at McLean County Nursing home for their compassionate care during his stay.

She was a retired secretary from Millikin University. She loved to go camping, riding on the motorcycle and being a Grandma. She married Charles Duane Street on August 31, 1957 he preceded her in death on October 19, 1970. She then married John McKinney on November 13, 1985. She is survived by her husband John; sons, Stephen Street of Decatur; David Street (Starla) of Decatur; Lyle Street (Valarie) of Macon; Gary Street (Jennifer) of Murphysboro; daughter, Linda Jordan (Steve) of Mabelvale, AR; step-sons, Carl McKinney (Ellie) of Naples, FL; Steve McKinney of Terre Haute, IN; brother Don Marsh (Jo) of Hattiesburg, MS; sister, Beverly Halsema of Mason City; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, one brother, Robert, one step-son, Daniel McKinney, and one grandson, Jordan Street. Mildred (Billie) Henry of Decatur

DECATUR - Mildred (Billie) Henry, 102, of Decatur died October 6 in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a short illness. She was born March 9, 1909 in Barclay, daughter of George Thomas and Susan Gertrude (Yocom) Hickman. Billie graduated from Williamsville High School in 1927 and attended Brown Business College in Springfield. She was married toe J. Harold (Dutch) Henry in 1930 and moved to Decatur. They had two daughters, Nancy (Pat) Boylson and Sally (Ed) Kuny. Billie was above all a homemaker, wife, and mother. She was active in PTA and Girl Scouts while her daughters were growing up. She was a caring, loving grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend to many young and old. She had a special love for children and animals. Billie spent many hours in volunteer work in the community and in her church, First United Methodist where she was a member for over 78 years. She especially enjoyed her church circle and her Tri Psi membership. Billie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, four sisters, and grandson Greg Boylson. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, 42 great grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 12 nieces and nephews, several cousins, and special neighbors. Funeral services will be held at Thursday, October 13 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, with visitation from 12:00 until 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Joseph W. Joe Walsh of Farmer City

FARMER CITY — Joseph W. “Joe” Walsh, 71, Farmer City, died at 10:09 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 5, 2011) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, following a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

His funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City. The Rev. Mike Jenkins will officiate. Burial will be in Campground Cemetery, Farmer City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) or the First Baptist Church of Farmer City. 

Joe was born Aug. 27, 1940, in Springfield, son of Robert E. and Elizabeth Reeser Walsh. He married Pat Hurley on July 27, 1967, in Farmer City, they were married 26 years. He married Paula Palivos on April 4, 2011, in Farmer City, they shared 18 years together. 

He is survived by his wife, Paula Walsh, Farmer City; his father, Robert E Walsh, Farmer City; two children, Patty Jo Walsh and Rob Walsh, both of Normal; three stepchildren, Nathan (Annie) Bowns, Farmer City; Angela (Kevin Sisney) Palivos, Mahomet; and Andrea (Brent McCullough) Palivos, Rantoul; two brothers, Tom (Sandra) Walsh, Camdenton, Mo., and Richard (Sally) Walsh, Farmer City; one sister, Linda (Steve) Rogers, Eureka Springs, Ark.; eight stepgrandchildren; six nephews; one great-niece; and one great-great-nephew. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth; his grandparents; three nephews; and one infant stepson.

Joe loved to study the stock markets and commodity markets. He enjoyed a long career in agriculture and business, owning and operating Mansfield Grain Inc., Joe Walsh Trucking, Walsh Grain Propane, and farming in Parnell. He also managed Walsh Grain Elevator for several years. He served in the Illinois Air National Guard from 1963 to 1969. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Farmer City, Piatt County Farm Bureau, and DeWitt County Pheasants Forever. He loved to laugh and visit with friends.

Martha Jane Halsema of Bloomington

Martha “Jane” Halsema, 81, of Bloomington died at 4:48 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 1, 2011) at her home.

A private graveside service will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal, with Monsignor Douglas Hennessy officiating. There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society. Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Bloomington, the daughter of George and Viola Frazier Callahan. She married Warren Lee “Bud” Halsema on Aug. 7, 1948, in Bloomington. He died Dec. 16, 1994.

Surviving are two daughters, Erin (Doug) Poag, Bloomington, and Barbara (Lane) O’Connor, Towanda; six grandchildren, Warren Poag, Margaret “Meg” Poag, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Poag, Erin O’Connor-Fabrizio, Ryan O’Connor and Mark Krug; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Nathan Poag; and two sisters, Gertrude Briggs and Margaret Crawford.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and George Callahan; and a sister, Minnie (Jack) Lower.

Jane was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Bloomington.

She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose greatest joy in life was taking care of her family.
