George was born November 28, 1919 in Muskingum Co., OH the son of Milford and Golden (Tom) Tool. He married Virginia J. Shaw January 2, 1941 in Keokuk, Iowa. She passed away November 13, 2010.
 
Survivors include his children: Nancy Sprague, Clinton, IL, Art (Ruth) Tool, Clinton, IL, Kathy Tool, Champaign, IL; 3 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother:, Joe Tool, Rich Hill, MO; sisters: June Turner, Jacksonville, IL and Jane Hess, Davidson, N.C.
 
He was preceded in death by his Parents, 1 Grandson, 1 Brother and 1 Sister.

Virginia V. Doss

Virginia V. Doss, 100, of Farmer City, passed away at 12:03 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 23, 2016) at Farmer City Rehabilitation & Health Care.

Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City, with Pastor Jeremiah Thompson officiating.

 

Burial: Maple Grove Cemetery, Farmer City.

Visitation: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Linda Reed

Linda C. Reed 69 of Clinton, Illinois passed away 11:24 AM November 22, 2016 at Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal, IL.

 

Services will be 10 AM, Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL, with Scott Marsh officiating. Burial will follow at Texas Township Cemetery, Clinton, Il. Visitation will be 5 – 8 PM, Friday, November 25, 2016 at the funeral home.

Linda was born March 20, 1947 in Lincoln, IL the daughter of Robert and Maxine (Routson) Coombs, Sr. She married Robert L. Reed October 22, 1966 in Clinton, IL.

 

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Reed, Clinton, IL, son, Robert (Susan) Reed, Jr., Waldorf, MD; mother, Maxine Coombs, Lincoln, IL; sisters: Marsha Plymell, Clinton, IL; and Susie Robinson, Lincoln, IL; brother, Robert (Valerie) Coombs, Lincoln, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her son, David Wayne Reed and father, Robert Coombs, Sr.

 

Linda was a bus driver for 20 years for Special Education children. She loved her church, Texas Christian Church. Linda was a Red Cross volunteer but most of all she enjoyed being a homemaker.

James Van Valey Jr.

James R. Van Valey Jr., 73, of Clinton, passed away at 11:40 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 19, 2016) at his family residence in Clinton.

 

A time to celebrate James’ life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton. Memorials may be directed to National Foundation of the Deaf.

 

James was born Dec. 27, 1942, in Clinton, the son of James R. and Pauline Crum Van Valey Sr. He married Lois Winebrinner in 1959; she passed away March 19, 2001.

 

 

Survivors include his children, James R. (Michelle) Van Valey III, Clinton; Jeffrey Van Valey, Clinton; and Julie (Chris) Griffith, Clinton; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Marie (John) Rush, Bloomington.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

James retired from Revere/Olin Copper & Brass Inc. He loved motorcycles, woodworking, coaching baseball and spending time with his grandchildren.

Lynn R. Kennedy 76 of Clinton, Illinois passed away 1:30 PM November 16, 2016 at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, IL.

Lynn was born October 31, 1940 in Macon Co., IL the son of Gail M. and Edith B. (Streich) Kennedy.

Survivors include his daughter, Sherry Lyn Kennedy, Statesville, N.C.; son, Aaron Kennedy, Clinton, IL; grandson, Benjamin Kennedy, Cowden, IL; brother, James M. (Linda) Kennedy, Burr Ridge, IL.

Ethel Leenerman

Ethel L. Leenerman, 90, of Mahomet, formerly of Champaign, died at 2 a.m. Monday (Nov. 14, 2016), at Carle Foundation Hospital, Champaign.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, with visitation prior starting at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Sibley.

 

She was born April 8, 1926, in Champaign, a daughter of Hershel and Maime Hamburg Bryant. She married Arthur L. Leenerman on July 26, 1969, in Champaign; he survives in Mahomet.

Also surviving are one stepson, Gregory (Susan) Leenerman, Broomfield, Colo.; two granddaughters, Emma Leenerman, Grand Junction, Colo., and Kristen Leenerman, Seattle, Wash.; two grandsons, Jason Eaton and Ryan Cooper, both of Palmetto, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Cooper; a son, Gregory; and two sisters, Velma Wentland and Ellenora Lever.

Ethel worked for Illinois Bell for 30 years. She was a member of the Mahomet American Legion Auxiliary, the Champaign Moose Lodge and the U.S.S. Indianapolis Association.

Delbert Arthur "Art" Bateson

Delbert Arthur “Art” Bateson, 79, of Clinton, passed away at 5:48 a.m. Friday (Nov. 18, 2016), at Hickory Point Christian Village, Forsyth.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with Jim Kilson officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery, Clinton, with military honors. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Art was born Feb. 6, 1937, in Clinton, the son of C.W. and Aldora Funk Bateson. He married Beverly Jane Isaac on April 6, 1962, in Clinton. She passed away on Sept. 29, 2013.

Survivors include his children, Pam (Alan) Coppenbarger, Clinton; Brenda Griffin, Clinton; and Darrin (Sara) Bateson, Clinton; six grandchildren, Toni (Scott) Richardson, Forsyth; Seth and Tara Coppenbarger, Clinton; Hannah (Matt) Bell, Gibson City; and Libby and Ella Bateson, Clinton; one great-granddaughter, Lainey Kay Richardson, Forsyth; and two sisters, Sharon (Ronnie) Gaddis, Mount Zion, and Beverly Reeser, Allen, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carol Jean Vaccaro.

Art was a Clinton Community High School graduate, Class of 1956. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961 as a B-52 bomber mechanic in the strategic air command. After 43 years of service to the Illinois Central Railroad in the bridge and building department, he retired as a foreman.

Art enjoyed fishing, horseshoe pitching, watching westerns on TV, and crossword puzzles, and was an L.A. Dodgers and Boston Celtics fan. He was a member of the Clinton Amvets and Lane Christian Church, volunteering for the backpack program at the church.

 

D. Carolyn Monaghan

D. Carolyn Monaghan, 80, of Farmer City, passed away at 10:25 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 17, 2016), at Liberty Village, Clinton.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Cemetery, Farmer City. Pastor Ernie Harvey will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Illinois Small Animal Rescue, Colfax.

She was born Nov. 21, 1935, in Farmer City, to Lemuel Corwin and Viola Thacker Ennis. She married William J. Monaghan on Sept. 19, 1958, in Wapella. He passed away on May 15, 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Anthony J. Monaghan, Clinton, and Daniel A. (Michelle) Monaghan, Farmer City; one daughter, Jacqueline S. (Rodney) Jones, Farmer City; one nephew, Jeffrey Ennis, Bellflower; six grandchildren, Caitlin (Micah) McCoy, Farmer City; Shannon Monaghan, Bloomington; Lewis Matthias, Clinton; David Monaghan, Farmer City; Michael (Elizabeth) Jones, San Jose, Calif.; and Jennifer (Eric) Kauppila, Seattle, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Sam and Sadie McCoy of Farmer City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Donald Ennis.

 

Jerry Gawthorp

Jerry W. Gawthorp, 84 of Princeville, formerly of Clinton IL, died November 12, 2016 at Unity Point Methodist Hospital, Peoria IL with his family by his side. 
 
Jerry was born March 7, 1932 in Scott County Missouri, the son of Harold and Marie (Blattel) Gawthorp. He married Carolynn Bowling August 23, 1968 in Clinton, IL. She survives him along with daughters Rachel Gawthorp (Mark), Rebecca (Chris) Rock, Princeville IL and grandchildren, Marcus and Paige Rock, Princeville.  Two sisters survive, Beatrice Simmons, Germantown Hills, IL and Betty (Bob) Cowles, Green Valley AZ, as well as many nieces and nephews.  
 
Jerry resided in Clinton, IL most of his life. He retired from the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Department as Jail Administrator.  He was a member of the First Christian Church, Clinton and a member and Past Master of DeWitt Lodge 84, AF & AM and dual member of Princeville Lodge 360 AF & AM.
 
He served 18 years on the Clinton Library Board and eight years on the Clinton Unit District #15 School Board.  Jerry enjoyed reading, history, genealogy research and mostly delighted in being with his family.  
 
Cremation Rites were accorded and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Gene Durbin

Fred Eugene “Gene” Durbin, 74, of Cerro Gordo, IL, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur, IL.
 
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Cerro Gordo, IL, with visitation two hours prior to service time at the funeral home. Gene was born September 3, 1942, in Monticello, IL, the son of Fred M. and Doris (Wildman) Durbin. He married Judith A. Martin on December 10, 1960 in Cerro Gordo, IL.
 
Gene was a 1960 graduate of Bement High School, and worked for Caterpillar Tractor, retiring after 33 years of service. Gene enjoyed gardening, coon hunting, and running hoop nets on the Sangamon River. He was an avid deer hunter. Gene was a member of the Black & Tan Coon Hunters Association.
 
He is survived by his wife Judith of 55 years; children Michael E. (Linda) Durbin of Cerro Gordo, Debra D. (Mark) Blickensderfer of Cerro Gordo, Genea A. (Jay) Lawler of Oakley, Danny C. (Leah) Durbin of Cerro Gordo, Scott R. (Diann) Durbin of Cerro Gordo; grandchildren Laura, Lisa, Cole, Kara, Megan, Nathan, Ryan, Maddy, Molly, Mya, Olivia, Jillian, Griffin, Bennett; great grandchildren Knox, Sylvie, Zeke, Nash; brothers Francis D. Litta Mae Perkey was born January 4, 1930 in Clinton, IL the daughter of Carl A. and Rosa Mae (Guffey) Perkey. She married Burnell Carter February 12, 1950 in Clinton, IL. He passed away August 14, 2003.

 

Survivors include her 2 sons: Weldon (Karlyn) Carter and Dennis Carter both of Clinton, IL; 2 grandsons: Robert (Catherine) Carter and Brett (Lyn) Carter both of Bloomington, IL. Also surviving are three great grandchildren: Zoe Carter, Hoyt Carter and Leo Carter all of Bloomington, IL.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother: Weldon Perkey.

 

Litta graduated from Clinton High School and attended Illinois State Normal University for two years, majoring in Home Economics.

 

Litta retired in 1991 as Head of Payroll after over forty years of service with Revere Copper and Brass/Corning; she was blessed with life-long friendships from her years at Revere. In her younger years, Litta enjoyed crocheting. After her eyesight was diminished due to macular degeneration, she spent many hours listening to books on tape. Throughout her life, Litta loved entertaining family and friends on holidays.

Jeffrey was born February 7, 1965 in Decatur, IL the son of Jerry and Judy (Ferrill) Mahoney. He married Michele A. Taubert June 24, 1989 in Clinton, IL.

Mahoney, Clinton, IL; parents, Jerry and Judy Mahoney, Argenta, IL; children:  Chase (Whitney) Stephenson, Clinton, IL and Caleb Mahoney, Clinton, IL; grandson, Wesley Stephenson, Clinton, IL; brother, Tim Mahoney, Argenta, IL; and special friends:  Brad and Janelle Thomas and Meghan Matthews.

Robert Hudson

Robert N. Hudson, 83, of Atlanta passed away at 11:22 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 12, 2016), at Hopedale Medical Complex, Hopedale.
 
His service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. Following the service, burial will take place at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Bob was born May 23, 1933, in Elliott, the son of Cloyd and Mildred Nelson Hudson.
 
He is survived by his children, Lisa (Terry) Spray; Atlanta; Bruce (Mechelle) Williams, St. Joseph; Dorothy C. Dwyer, Christine Higgs and Connie Higgs, all of Illinois; and the mother of his children, Wilma Roberts.
 
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kayla and Robert Brosmore, Heather and Eric Wilkerson, Jacob Spray, Jason and Cori Williams and Chad Williams; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother; Henry Thomas (Lavon) Hudson, Normal.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents.
 
Bob worked for Kathryn Beich Candy Co., later known as Nestle Beich Candy Co., retiring after 42 years. He was a member of the Bakers and Confectionery Union Local 342, Bloomington.
 
He was an avid fisherman, camper and Minnesota Vikings and Cubs fan. He enjoyed bowling and was on several bowling leagues. He loved fixing things, especially lawn mowers. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix.
 
Bob loved his family, and they affectionately called him the “Candy Man.” He will be deeply missed by all of them.
 
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff and nurses of Hopedale Medical Complex and to Dr. Matt Rossi for their wonderful care and compassion.

Paul Linton

Paul Linton, 86, of Farmer City passed away at 7:24 p.m. Friday (Nov. 11, 2016), at Heritage Health, Bloomington.
 
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City, with Tony Billingsley officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Farmer City, with military rites accorded. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Paul was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Decatur, a son of Chester P. and Eva C. Thompson Linton. He married Marie Tarter on May 27, 1951, in Farmer City. She passed away on June 5, 1993.
 
He is survived by his children, Paula (Dennis) Hannah, Bellflower; Jean (Mike) Billington, McLean; and Scott (Brenda) Linton, Danvers; five grandchildren, Wade Hannah, Ryan (Ashley) Billington, Josh (Jessica) Billington, Josh (Cindy) Linton and Jessica (Ryan) Hartzold; seven great-grandsons; seven great-granddaughters; sister, Mary (Don) Mitten, Galva; and brother-in-law, Roger (Carolyn) Tarter, Cleburne, Texas.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Tim Hannah; and sister, Pauline Milburn.
 
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of McLean Christian Church.
 
Paul was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, and will be missed by all.

Mildred M. Maaks, 94, of Lincoln, formerly of New Holland, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 9, 2016), at The Christian Village, Lincoln.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, New Holland, with the Rev. Charles Olander officiating.

 

Visitation: 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Burial: following  the service at Richmond Grove Cemetery, Eureka.

Sarah Kay Stone

On the morning of November 1, 2016 Sarah Kay Stone, 29 of San Diego, CA formerly of Clinton, IL, peacefully passed through the gates of Heaven after a ten and a half month battle with appendix cancer; surround by family and tenderly cared for by the staff at UCSD Thornton Hospital, La Jolla, CA.

Services will be 12 Noon Friday, November 11, 2016 at the First Christian Church, Clinton, IL with Ernie Harvey, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery, Clinton, IL. Visitation will be 4 – 8 P.M. Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the church. Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah was born October 17, 1987 in Lincoln, IL the second child and first daughter of Franklin W. and Mary Jane (Jackson) Shofner. She married Johnathon E. Stone July 22, 2006 in Clinton, IL.

Survivors include her husband: Johnathon E. Stone, San Diego, CA; 4 beautiful children: Alyssa, Allison, Madylynn and Jackson Stone; her parents: Franklin W. and Mary Jane Shofner, of Clinton, IL; paternal grandmother, Darlene Shofner, Maroa, IL; siblings: Jason Shofner, Clinton, IL, Casandra (Tim) Miracle, Bloomington, IL Marina Shofner, Clinton, IL and Susan Shofner, Clinton, IL, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Franklin Shofner, Sr.; and maternal grandparents, Grover and Marilyn Jackson.

As a military spouse and stay at home mother of 4 beautiful children, she naturally had a way of making, not only her family but everyone’s life around her better. Sarah was known for her ability to turn any bad situation into a good one. She was an inspiration to everyone she had contact with. No matter what she had going on personally, she always made it a point to put everyone else first. She will always be remembered for the fight she put up against cancer and her ability to stay positive throughout the entire journey. She was without a doubt one of a kind and has had direct impact on thousands of people.

Violet L. Swaim, 80, of Bement, IL., passed away at 10:01 P.M., on Monday, November 7, 2016, at the Kirby Medical Center, Monticello, IL.

Violet was born on April 2, 1936 in Bement, IL., a daughter of Earl and Hilda Pruitt Van Landingham. She married Frank Swaim on August 8, 1954 in Bement, IL., and he survives of Bement. Surviving children include; Cheryl (Dennis) Pansegerau of Toledo, IA, Michael (Karlene) Swaim of Ankenys, IA, and Kevin ( Mary Ann) Swaim of Heyworth, IL. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, son; Steven Swaim and a sister; Christine Swaim.

Violet was a member of the First Christian Church of Bement and volunteered at the Bement Community School District for many different things. She enjoyed reading, gardening, crafts and blue grass festivals.

Violet L. Swaim, 80, of Bement, IL., passed away at 10:01 P.M., on Monday, November 7, 2016, at the Kirby Medical Center, Monticello, IL.

Wayne F. Foran

Wayne F. Foran, 91, of Bement, IL., passed away at 6:15 A.M. on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at the Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana, IL.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2016, from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., at the Hinds Funeral Home, 348 N. Piatt St., Bement, IL. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., on Monday, November 14, 2016, at the St. Michael's Catholic Church, Bement. The Rev. Father Bruce Lopez will officiate. Burial with military honors given by the Albert Parker American Legion Post #620, Bement, will be in the Bement Township Cemetery, Bement. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Michael's Catholic Church, Bement for masses, Bement Alumni Association and the Albert Parker American Legion Post #620.

 

Wayne was born on October 14, 1925, in Bement, a son of Edward and Catherine Tucker Foran. He married Claudette Saunders on August 19, 1954, in Shelbina, MO., and she survives of Bement. Surviving children include; Charlie Foran of Bement, IL., Annette (Gary) Durbin of Monticello, IL., Julie (David) LaPlant of Libertyville, IL., Dana Foran of Bement, IL., and Wendy (David) Farmer of Monticello, IL. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; his sister; Marie Beck. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers; Edward, Cletus, Leo, Robert and Wilmer “Babe” Foran.

Wayne, a lifelong resident of Piatt County, was dedicated to his family, community, state, and country. He graduated from Bement High School in 1943 and was awarded the 2016 BHS Alum of the Year Award. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946, including the Normandy Invasion. He and a shipmate attended the 50th D-Day Anniversary in Normandy; he received the Quilt of Valor; has his story published in the Library of Congress, and was selected for the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Wayne was an avid learner who graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1985 (B.A.) and 1987 (M.S.).

Wayne was a farmer before a career in real estate (1966-2016), including Piatt County Supervisor of Assessments for 16 years. He received the U.S. Department of Housing and Urbana Development Award. He was a lifelong member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church and the Albert Parker American Legion Post #620 for 70 years. He organized LST 372 Navy reunions since 1981. Wayne was a loyal Cubs fan and lived to see them win the World Series. But with all of these accomplishments, he felt the greatest pride in the legacy of the family he leaves behind.

Leo Goodpasture

Leo Goodpasture passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2016 in Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Goodpasture was born July 8, 1930 to C.E. and Edith Goodpasture. He was an Air Force veteran and was an MP serving during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers Lloyd, Eugene, Kenneth and Milton Ray. He leaves behind nephews Ronnie and Dennis Goodpasture, Kenney, Illinois; Terry Gene Goodpasture, Champaign, Illinois; and Joan (Goodpasture) Hatfield and John Goodpasture of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Ray Virden

Ray L. Virden, 80, of Latham passed away at 9:10 A.M. on Saturday, November 5, 2016 in Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur.
 
Ray was born on June 1, 1936 in Fayette Co. IL, the son of Ralph and Verna (Leigh) Virden. He married Roberta Speer on December 4, 1955 in Bingham, IL, she survives him in Latham.
 
Ray is also survived by his daughter, Rae Ann Virden of Latham; his brother, Dennis (Iris) Viden of Ramsey, IL; his sisters, Faye (Ralph) Roberts of Decatur, IL, and Patricia O’Dell of Ramsey IL; and his grandson, Ryan (Samantha) Virden of Latham.
 
Ray has been preceded in death by his parents, and his twin brother, Rex.

Lyman Woodrum

Lyman L. “Chad” Woodrum, 66, of Monticello, passed away at 9:25 A.M. Thursday-November 3, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
 
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday-November 6th at the Crossroads Church, 1602 N. 1125 E. Rd., Monticello, IL 61856. Pastor Rich Ratts will officiate. There will be no visitation.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads Church, Monticello or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
 
Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City is in charge of arrangements.
 
Mr. Woodrum was born September 17, 1950 in Decatur, IL to Lyman S. and Alice Maude White Woodrum. He married Candice L. Hettinger May 2, 1976 in Monticello. She survives in Monticello.
 
Also surviving are his mother: Alice M. Woodrum of Decatur; 2 Sons: Jesse (Megan) Woodrum of Champaign, Casey (Marah) Woodrum of Monticello; 1 Step-Son: Logan Mohr of Monticello; 1 Brother: Terrace (Alice) Woodrum of Decatur; and 2 Sisters: Vicki Woodrum of Monticello and June Lynn (Bill) Meirs of Decatur.

Penny Shea Passfield, 60, of Rochester, formerly of Atlanta, died Thursday (Nov. 3, 2016), at her residence.
 
Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at South Fork Church of Christ, Rochester.
 
Burial: at a later date in Rochester Cemetery.
 
Visitation: 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson Park Funeral Home, Rochester.
