Sally E. Swarts, 93 of Cisco, IL passed away 4:10 PM October 28, 2019 at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, IL.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the St. Philomena Catholic Church, Monticello, IL with Monsignor Michael Bliss Celebrant. Sally was born June 24, 1926 on the family farm south of Weldon, IL, the daughter of Clifford and Eleanor (Henson) Edwards. She married Herald E. Swarts July 15, 1943 in Chicago, IL. He passed away September 14, 2004.

Survivors include her son, Michael Swarts, Cisco, IL; grandchildren, Timothy (Freedom) Swarts, Tullahoma, TN, Matt (Brie) Clark, Pensacola, FL, Paul Clark, Cisco, IL, Donna Roe, Cisco, IL, Danny (Sara) Marsh, Edwardsville, IL; great grandson, Kaleb (Lindsey) Swarts, great-great granddaughter, Tinley Swarts, great-great grandson, Cohen Swarts all of Decatur, IL; great grandchildren, Timmy, Sarah, Leah, and Rachael Swarts all of Tullahoma, TN; great grandchildren, Jacob and Dylan Roe, Cisco, IL; and special friend, Patricia Swarts, Cisco, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and 1 grandson, Farren Andrew Swarts.

Sally worked with her brother, Ron Edwards, at Weldon Fertilizer Inc, she retired in 1991 after 30 years of service. After retiring, she spent much of her time raising flowers, indoors and out; her favorites were African Violets. She was an avid reader, keeping a notebook of what she had read. Working crossword puzzles were a favorite activity. Making cookies for her family and friends was always enjoyable but spending time with her family made her the happiest.

Sally was a member of the St. Philomena Catholic Church and Craig Reed Auxiliary.

She will be greatly missed by her friends and family, leaving many cherished memories. 

 Joel Elder Hendricks 77 of Clinton, IL passed away peacefully October 29, 2019 at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, IL.

Services will be 11 AM Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the St. John’s Catholic Church, Clinton, IL with Rev. Fr. James Henning officiating. Visitation will be 10 – 11 AM Saturday at the Church. The family entrusted Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL with arrangements.

Joel was born April 15, 1942 in Mattoon, Illinois to C.E. Hendricks and Mary (Elder) Hendricks.  Survivors include his wife, Dottie Hendricks, son Andrew Hendricks, and stepsons Mark Calvert (Lori Howell), Jeff Calvert (Jill), Sister Jeanine Craig, Brother, Jeff Hendricks (Judy) and grandchildren Zachary and Corissa Calvert and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Jerri Sue Hendricks and Jackie Almer.

Joel graduated from Mattoon High School in 1960 and earned his bachelor’s from Eastern Illinois University.  Joel was an educator and salesman.  He worked for the Decatur Herald and Review for 34 years.  He served on the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, Tree Commission and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.

Joel is most well-known for his lifelong interest in Native American art and culture.  During his lifetime he became an expert artist, lecturer, teacher and holder of Native American wisdom.  He was a member of the White Buffalo Society and Tecumseh Lodge.  He was a published author.

 Carolyn Hish 72 of DeWitt, IL passed away 1:50 AM October 29, 2019 at Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn, IL with love and blessings from her family.

Services will be 11 AM Friday, November 1, 2019 at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL with Pastor John Roberson officiating. Burial will follow at DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt, IL. Visitation will be 10 – 11 AM Friday at the funeral home.

Carolyn was born to the late Russell Frederick and Mattie Sue (Harper) Waldron, February 23, 1947 in Caruthersville, MO. She married Dennis Hish June 2, 1994 in Berryville, AR.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Hish, DeWitt, IL, 2 daughters, Renay (Richard) VanVickle, Caruthersville, MO; Michelle Stricklan, Kennett, MO, 2 stepchildren of South Carolina. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Brandon (Gabby) VanVickle, Krista Stricklan, and Brianna VanVickle and 3 spoiled, loving great-grandchildren that she adored, as well as her biggest baby Bosco (her dog), 1 brother, David (Pat) Waldron, IL, 2 sisters, Sandra (Chuck) Malin, NB and Lori Britton, MO; along with a number of other loving relatives and close friends. 

She was preceded in death by one sister, Deborah Jones..

A loving mother and homemaker, Carolyn was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, especially over the holidays. For many years leading up to her passing, she collected a large library of cookbooks and recipes. No one ever left her house without an arm load of cookies, homemade bread or jars of salsa and pickles, (better bring her jars back though). She also loved to travel and could out shop anyone.

Lorin Karl Borton, Jr. 89 of DeLand, IL passed away 10:01 PM October 24, 2019 at Kirby Medical Center, Monticello, IL.

 Darrin Lee Fort 55 of Clinton, IL passed away 11:25 A.M. October 16, 2019 within his family residence in Clinton, IL.

Darrin, the son of Ivan E. and Ruthanne (Provin) Fort, was born January 27, 1964 in Bloomington, IL.

Survivors include his daughter, Megan Fort of Bourbonnais, IL, parents, Ivan E. and Ruthanne Fort, Clinton, IL, brother, Scott Fort, Bloomington, IL, and his beloved cat, Kitty.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Darrin worked twenty-five years for Wallace Business Forms in Clinton. Darrin's passion included the maintenance, washing, and "joy rides" in his 70 Chevelle. Darrin was an avid drag race fan and raced his 68 Camaro at many of the local drag tracks. Throughout Darrin's life he acquired many life stories full of adventure and laughter. Darrin was known for befriending anyone and everyone. Darrin touched the lives of the people he surrounded and will be gravely missed by many.   

 Barbara Louise (Hassinger) Baker, 87, of Farmer City, IL passed away at 4:40 PM, October 22, 2019 at her family residence, Farmer City, IL.

Barbara was born August 6, 1932 in Clinton, IL the daughter of Robert and Bessie (Hale) Hassinger.  She married Dorwin Baker July 16, 1952 in Chicago, IL

Survivors include her husband, Dorwin Baker, Farmer City, IL; children:  Deborah (Bill) Carter, Nokomis, FL; Brenda Baker, Sarasota, FL; Beverly Healey, Powell, TN; Gary (Denise) Baker, Murfreesboro, TN; Doug (Jeannie) Baker, Ypsilanti, MI; Maria Clark and Iris Leiva, exchange students whom they thought of as their own children; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 granddaughter, Shayla Upchurch; 2 brothers:  Robert and James Hassinger; and cousin “sister”, Wilma Woodring.

Barbara graduated from radio electronics school in Omaha, NE.  She worked at John Warner Bank, State Farm Insurance, Illinois Central Railroad for 19 years, and UPS for 15 years.

Charles Otis “Charlie” Belangee, 87, of Clinton, Illinois passed away at 5:45 A.M. Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, Illinois.

His funeral will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 25, 2019, at the First Christian Church, 100 N. Jackson St., Clinton, Illinois with Ernie Harvey Jr. and J. Kent Hickerson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Park Cemetery, Clinton, Illinois with Military Rites accorded. Visitation will be from 4:00 P. M. – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, October 24, 2019, at the church. Charlie was born November 7, 1931, in Springfield, Illinois, a son of George Everett & Mayme Leota Staton Belangee. He married Anna Louise Simmons on June 8, 1952 in Hillsboro, Illinois.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Ann Belangee of Clinton, Illinois; daughter, Kay Ann (John) Werts of Clinton, Illinois; 3 grandchildren, Marc (Connie) Werts of Mt. Pulaski, Illinois; Jessica (Jake) Sullivan of Smithville, Missouri; Luke (Amber) Werts of Clinton, Illinois; 6 great grandchildren, Maggie Werts; Haylee Werts; Joy Werts; Jesse Werts; Jack Sullivan; Norah Sullivan. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Elvis Belangee, Elsie Solander, and Virgil Belangee.

Charlie was a retired switchman for the central office of General Telephone Company, Clinton, Illinois from 1956-1994. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Clinton where he served as Bible School Superintendent for forty years. He was a member of the Crang- Bennett American Legion, Post 103, Clinton, Illinois.

 Mary Lou Mills 91 of Clinton, Illinois passed away 1:06 A.M. October 21, 2019 at Liberty Village, Clinton, Il.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her Parents; 1 daughter, Debra Ackerman; 3 sisters:  Charlotte Holloway, Heyne Rau, and Mildred Clark; and 1 brother, John Rau.

Mary Lou was a member of the First Christian Church, Clinton, IL, the DeWitt Co. Home Extension, and the DeWitt Co. Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.

 Edward Joseph Duvall, 87 of Clinton, passed away at 1:40 pm Thursday, October 17, 2019, peacefully at his home.

He was born January 28, 1932, in Clinton, to George "Jack" and Nora (Conroy) Duvall. He married Norma Wickenhauser on February 15, 1956.

Surviving is his children, Karen Manning, Joseph Duvall and Susan (Vernon) Vinson, all of Clinton; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, wife Norma, daughter Nancy McKenna, and granddaughter Keisha Wells.

Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1950-1954 and he retired from Caterpillar after 32 years. He was an avid Cubs, Bears and Illini fan. He was a Golden Eagle at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #593.  Joe enjoyed fishing and he especially loved his grandchildren and spending time with them.

A special thank you from the family to his hospice nurses for taking such great care of him. He will be dearly missed.

Harry was born February 8, 1951 in Ottawa, KS the son of Archie and Elizabeth (Waymire) Wheeler. He married Brenda Kay Phelps October 27, 1973 in Rolla, MO. She passed away December 2, 2009.

Survivors include his children, Michelle (Brian) Greenslate, Mackinaw, IL; Nathan (Sarah) Wheeler, Clinton, Il.; Christopher (Megan) Wheeler, Clinton, Il.; grandchildren:  Tyler Wheeler, Savannah Wheeler, Noah Wheeler, Ella Wheeler, and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws, Wilbert and Lucille Phelps, Rolla, MO.

He loved the outdoors and spending time with his grandkids.

 Thomas Wayne Mathes, 72, beloved husband, father and Papaw, passed away September 20, 2019 in his home after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Calvert Funeral Home-Argenta Chapel 685 N Main St. Argenta, IL with Sally Cissna officiating. Burial will be in Friends Creek Cemetery with full military honors.

A Gloucester, VA resident for 35 years, Tom was born October 14, 1946 in Monticello, Illinois and grew up in Argenta, Illinois. He was the son of Harley Wayne and Clara (Cissna) Mathes. He married his high school sweetheart Sharon King on November 19,1966 and together they raised their 3 children in Mt. Zion until moving their family to Virginia in 1984. They shared an amazing 53 years together. Tom proudly served his country in the United States Airforce during Vietnam as a bomber mechanic. He was stationed in California, Guam and Japan. Using the trade skills, he learned in the United States Air Force he worked his way through the mechanical field before landing in commercial refrigeration.

Tom loved spending time with his family. Often just sitting and laughing around a campfire together. His love of the outdoors, kept him fishing, camping and enjoying the simple things in life. He spent his off time tending his oriental gardens and breeding Japanese Koi, an interest he developed while stationed in Japan. He also enjoyed breeding different varieties of ducks and chickens. He was a lover of animals. Only second to the love of his family. His favorite hobby of all of was aggravating his grandkids which they thoroughly enjoyed and aggravated him back. He was a former of member of the Mt Zion Christian Church in Mt. Zion Il and attended Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church in Hayes, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Clara and also his sister Janet.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sharon, daughter Tina (Mathes) Kempa and her husband Bryan, son Jason Mathes and his wife Heather and son Patrick Mathes.  5 grandchildren, Whitney, Ashley, Summer, Andrew, and Logan and 2 great grandchildren Kinley and namesake Charles Thomas. He will be missed by his mother in law Mildred King and many special sisters in law, brothers in law, nieces, nephews, extended family as well as his best friend from childhood, John Kruse.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup is releasing the name of a Georgetown, Illinois child who has died from injuries sustained after being involved in a motor vehicle crash in Vermilion County on October 9, 2019.

Wyatt Pope, 9, of Georgetown, Illinois, died at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois at 8:46 AM on October 12, 2019, from multiple traumatic injuries. Wyatt was reported to be a passenger in a vehicle that struck two vehicles before crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with a third vehicle.

The crash occurred on Illinois Route 1 near Vermilion County 900 North.

Wyatt’s father, Tyler J. Pope, died on October 9, 2019, of his injuries at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville, Illinois.

No autopsy will be performed however, an inquest may be held on a later date.

This death is being investigated by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police District 10.
 

Harry J. O’Riley, 88, of Maroa, IL passed away at 10:55 AM, October 10, 2019, at Hickory Point Christian Village, Forsyth, IL.

Masonic services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at the Maroa United Methodist Church, Maroa, IL with religious services to follow with Rev. Mary Alice Cunningham officiating.  Burial will follow at Maroa Cemetery, Maroa, IL with Military Honors. Visitation will be 10 – 11 AM Wednesday at the church. Harry was born July 4, 1931, in Decatur, IL the son of Harry and Sophia (Miller) O’Riley. He was a Naval Korean War Veteran serving in the Coral Sea and later serving in the Naval Reserves. Harry retired from Revere Copper and Brass. He served on the Maroa City Council for twenty years and was a member of the Maroa Masonic Lodge and past member of the Lions Club, along with being a nearly sixty-year member of the Maroa United Methodist Church.

Harry married Margaret Gordon on January 7, 1956, at the Beecher City United Brethren Church. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, children, Vickie (Charles) Buckingham; Steven (Teri) O’Riley; Lori (David) Dougherty, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

His parents, two brothers, and four sisters preceded him in death.

Harry’s favorite times were spent with family and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials to Maroa United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society, or American Heart Association.

Faye was born February 20, 1925 in Waynesville, IL the daughter of William and May (Kesecker) Vinson.  She married Floyd Moore October 12, 1942.  He passed away October 27, 1970.  She later married Raymond C. Ogg June 16, 1973.  He passed away September 10, 1993.

Survivors include her children:  Kenneth Ray (Wanda) Moore, Herrin, IL; and Donna (Larry) Preston, Clinton, IL, 8 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 sisters, and 2 brothers.

Faye loved spending time with all of her grandchildren.

Dorothy was born December 25, 1926 in Clinton, Il. the daughter of Charles A. and Ruth E. (Smith) Huffman. She married Christian DeVisser June 19, 1964 in Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. He passed away October 9, 2011.

Survivors include her Brother-in-Law, Colonel Emerson Loveland, South Jordan, Utah and several Nieces and Nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her Parents and Sisters, Helen Loveland, Doris Huffman Barber and Brother, Paul Randall Huffman.

Dorothy was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Decatur, Il.
