Leonard R. Lehner, 88, Lincoln, peacefully entered eternal glory at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2012) at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, surrounded by his loving family.

His funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church, Lincoln. Burial with military rites will be at 10 a.m. Monday at New Union Cemetery, Lincoln. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday before the service at the church.

He was born May 22, 1923, in Lincoln, the son of Frank and Catherine Jacobs Lehner. He married Dorothy Ann Kollmann on Jan. 10, 1946, in Spokane, Wash. She preceded him in death Nov. 26, 2008.

Leonard was a graduate of Lincoln Community High School in 1943. During World War II, he was stationed on troop transports Zania and LaGrange as gunner’s mate 2nd class in the U.S. Navy. His service included time in the South Pacific on Okinawa. After serving in the Navy, he and Dorothy settled in Lincoln.

A plumber by trade, Leonard spent most of his career working at Lincoln Developmental and Logan Correctional Centers. He was also an accomplished carpenter and built the family home in which he and Dorothy raised their four children.

Leonard was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 137 and the Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society.  He was honored to attend the September 2011 Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

Leonard had a zest for life as evidenced by his devotion to his family, his good humor and his cheerful demeanor.

Arnold A. "Mike" Koehler, 89, of Mt. Pulaski died at 11:20 A.M. Wednesday April 25, 2012. Mike was born on November 13, 1922 in Lake Fork, IL, son of William and Bessie Sherwood Koehler. He married Berniece A. Torbeck on April 15, 1948 in Mt. Pulaski, IL. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2008. Mike is survived by two children: Judith Ann (Michael) Coleman of Decatur and Michael(Donna) Koehler of Mt Pulaski, two brothers, Dave (Bunny) Koehler of Morton, IL and William G. "Pudge" Koehler of Lincoln, IL, one sister Betty Johnson of Illiopolis, IL, four grandchildren, Joseph (Barbie) Coleman of Decatur, Jacob Coleman of Decatur, and Timothy and Sydney Koehler of Mt Pulaski. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and four sisters. Mike was an army veteran who was a prisoner of war during WWII, he became a prisoner of war during the Battle of The Bulge on December 19, 1944 and stayed one until April 25, 1945; Mike had received the Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, Three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, and the Overseas Bar. He was also a member of Mt Pulaski American Legion Post# 447 and Mt Pulaski VFW Post #777. Mike was a bus driver for Mt. Pulaski Township High School for 26 years where he really enjoyed all the children he had on his routes and was employed by the Mt. Pulaski Lumber Yard for 35 years. Services for Mike will be Monday April 30, 2012 at 11 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Mt Pulaski. Marilyn L. Leonard, age 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born February 2, 1934, in Mount Pulaski to Clarence and Dorothy (Shoup) Romer. She grew up in Mount Pulaski and Niantic and spent summers with her uncle and aunt, Robert "Breck" and Margaret Breckenridge, in Polo. Marilyn graduated from Niantic High School, where she met James C. Leonard. She married him on July 2, 1952. They raised three sons and two daughters, built a farm and became active members of the Illiopolis and Niantic communities. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, knitting and always having a cat in the house, earning her the nickname "Grandma Kitty." Marilyn was an avid sports fan, rooting for her children's and grandchildren's teams, as well as the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bulls. She especially cherished time with her family and was able to see six grandsons grow into young men. During retirement, Marilyn and James spent part of the year at their home in Bonita Springs, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Dorothy (Shoup) Romer, and aunts, Mildred Shoup and Margaret Breckenridge. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James C. Leonard of Niantic; five children, Stephen (Jill) Leonard of Niantic, Mark (Colleen) Leon-ard of Woodstock, Ronald (Sally Geyston) Leonard of Illiopolis, Janet (Craig) Kararo of Springfield and Judith (David) Gray of Decatur; and six grandchildren, Sean Leon-ard, Ryan Leonard, Timothy Leonard, Eric Leonard, Alexander Kararo and Evan Kararo. Cleo R. Hamilton, 85, Green Valley, Ariz., a native of Heyworth, died Sunday (April 22, 2012) at her home of congestive heart failure.

She was a full-time mother and homemaker and lived in Carlock and Rock Falls; Columbia, Mo.; and Green Valley.

She was interested in and participated in golf and a variety of crafts. She was a member of Carlock Christian Church and Green Valley Recreation.

Theo L. Harris, 87, died Friday (April 20, 2012) peacefully at his home.

He was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Gretchen Eichenberger Harris. Theo came to Illinois after World War II, settling in Farmer City, where he met and wed Ruth Pitman in 1948. They raised six children and have operated Harris TV & Appliance (now Harris TV & Appliance Sales Inc.) in Farmer City since 1953. Theo was involved in the operation of the family business until the last week of his life. He was a leader and past elder of the First Christian Church of Farmer City.

Theo is survived by his wife and children, Linda (Don) Trimble, Bellflower; David (Karen) Harris, Barbara Jean Harris, Janet (Dave) Zindars and Randy (Patricia) Harris, all of Farmer City; Dean (Tammy) Harris, LeRoy; and brother, Duane Harris, Polk City, Iowa. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and his beloved granddaughter, Jolee Trimble Mohr.

Theo loved his family, church and customers, many of whom simply called him the TV Man, and remember him for his rapid pace, hickory striped bib overalls, cap with a turned up bill and for driving just a little too fast in his bright red panel truck with the yellow Harris TV letters.

Billie was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Lincoln, a daughter of William C. and Emma Von Drehle Otte. She married Adam F. Bock on June 10, 1940, in Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Henry (Henrietta) Otte and Armin (Virginia) Otte; and four sisters, Bertha (Paul) Dahmm, Emma (William) Bock, Tryphena (Julius) Aper and Esther Otte.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years and many nieces and nephews and special friends, Charles and Mary Jane Anderson. She was the last of her immediate family.

She was a graduate of Lincoln Community High School and of the Deaconess Hospital as a registered nurse. She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She worked four years at the Illiopolis Munitions Plant during World War II as the head nurse.

She enjoyed gardening, cultivating flowers and caring for her beloved cats. She loved to help people and was a friend to everyone. The family wishes to thank the caregivers for their special care to Billie over the years.

Willard C. “Bill” Hammer, 72, Farmer City, passed away at 4:23 p.m. Saturday (April 14, 2012) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington surrounded by his family.

He was born Feb. 22, 1940, to Jess W. and Zeo Shreve Hammer. He married Kathryn Swartz on Nov. 12, 1957.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Hammer; children, Linda Jarboe, Cartersville, Ga.; Laura Hammer, Urbana; Greg (Liane) Hammer, Auburn; and Jess (Kathy) Hammer, Downs; nine grandchildren, Lesa (Ben) Brandt, Brandi Hammer, Jamie Jarboe, Tavelle Hammer, Holly Hammer, Shalika Hammer, Zein Hammer, Lucas Hammer and Jodie Jarboe; brother, Jim (Mary K) Hammer, Farmer City; and sister, Bonnie (Craig) Wright, Farmer City; and he was an uncle to many.   

He retired from and was a president of Labor Local 703 in Urbana. He was a president of the Farmer City Fair Association and was the announcer at the Farmer City Raceway and many area tracks for over 20 years. He was also a volunteer fireman.

Willard “Bill” Hammer, 72, of Farmer City passed away April 14, 2012, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington. Lowell Douglas (Jack) Thomas, 77, of Maxville, FL formerly of Cerro Gordo, passed away on Friday April 13, 2012. He was born in Cerro Gordo, IL and has lived in Maxville most of his life. He was a veteran and retired from the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the Navy Fleet Reserve # 126. He was the son of the late Ernest and Kathryn Benson Thomas. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Martha Harris Thomas; sons, Dennis Thomas (Pam) and Dean Thomas (Tonya) all of Maxville; sisters, Juanita Peterson of Mount Zion, IL, Beverly Walsh (Tom) of Cerro Gordo, IL, Donna Ousley (Roy) of Forsyth, IL, and Diana Brown (Fred) of Springfield, IL; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Raymond was born on October 25, 1914 in Bellflower, IL, the son of Clarence and Minnie (Albers) Lange. He married Lucile Vivian Anderson on February 17, 1940 in Weedman, IL. She passed away on September 25, 2008. Surviving are his sons; Larry Lange and Ted Lange both of Monticello, and Mike Lange of Lerna, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and a sister; Margie Morrissey of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and 3 sisters. Raymond farmed until 1965. Upon his retirement from farming he worked for the City of Monticello Street Department. Pierce George Johnston Jr., 69, Heyworth, died April 7, 2012, at his residence of a short reoccurrence of melanoma from 20 years ago.

In accordance with George’s wishes, no service will be held. Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of cremation services. In lieu of flowers, George requested donations be made to Park Township Airport in Holland, Mich.

This airport is an example of a surviving small airport built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) that was part of a national air transportation system. It currently serves as a gathering place for pilots who are passionate about small plane aviation. He was preceded in death by his parents.

George was a U.S. Naval aviator from 1966 through 1971 and a pilot with Eastern Airlines from 1972 through March 4, 1989. He was affiliated with Emmett-Scharf Electric Co. from 1964 through the present and operated Red Oak Tree Farm from 1994 until recently.

George went on his last flight “around the patch” (the farm) with his nephew, Tom Johnston, on March 27.
