Amalia Molly Barber of Clinton

Amalia “Molly” Barber, 23, Clinton, will be remembered as the light that brightened the lives of all those who knew and loved her. Molly died Saturday (May 19, 2012) on her 23rd birthday while hiking near Tucson, Ariz.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clinton Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. C. Don Ferrill officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton. Memorials may be made to the Molly Barber Memorial Fund.

Molly was born May 19, 1989, in Manhattan, Kan., daughter of Roxanne and Kevin Barber.

She is survived by her parents of Clinton; brothers, Eric and Kennon “Kip” Barber, both of Clinton; grandparents, Candy Buckus, Tucson, Ariz.; Wayne and Evangeline Barber, Sherburn, Minn.; and Janet Meyer, Tumwater, Wash.; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and Andrew Scharrbrough, the love of her life, of Indianapolis, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather.

Molly was a senior at Purdue University, where she was completing a degree in mechanical engineering. She completed internships with Monsanto Co. She was a proud member of Purdue’s All-American Marching Band. She was a campus tour guide, residential adviser and a member of the Ambassador program in the College of Engineering.

Molly was a 2007 graduate of Clinton High School, where she was co-valedictorian of her class. She participated in band, cross country, track, softball and Excel Club.

For Molly, family and friends were the center of her life. She was a master storyteller with a creative spirit that made anything she put her hand to more beautiful. The essence of Molly lives on in the hearts she touched, the lives she changed with her generous spirit and the warmth that unforgettable smile brought to everyone she met.

Molly was a member of Clinton Presbyterian Church.

Eileen Vermillion of Monticello

Eileen Vermillion, 81, of Monticello, passed away at 8:23 a.m., on May 14, 2012 at the Kirby Medical Center, Monticello. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home. Evelyn Luther Arndt of Bement

Evelyn Luther Arndt 96, of Champaign and formerly of Bement passed away on Saturday May 12, 2012 at 10:42 P.M. at Kirby Hospital, Monticello. She was born on April 14, 1916 in New Harmony to George W. and Sarah Kathryn Downen Luther. She married Frederick Alexander Arndt in 1939 and he preceded her in death on August 23, 2001. Survivors include two daughters- Elaine (Ronald) Arndt Day of Hammond and Mary Jo (Gene) Arndt Hogan of Clarksville, Tennessee and two grandsons- Michael Patrick Hogan of Clarksville, Tennessee and Timothy Alexander Day of New York City, New York and one granddaughter- April Katherine (David) Day Oleksy of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee and also one sister- Martha Luther Wharton of Carmel, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband- Frederick A. Arndt in August 23, 2001, a brother- William G. Luther who was P.O.W. and KIC in 1944 and two sisters- Kathryn Luther Smithhart in 1968, and Josephine Luther Brill in 1999. She received her BSEd. From Southern Illinois University and her MSEd. from the University of Illinois. She taught elementary education from 1934-1973 beginning in a one room school house. Mrs. Arndt also taught in the Ridgeway Illinois school system, and ended her career after teaching first and second grade for 21 years in the Bement, Illinois school district. In later years she was an avid crossword and jigsaw puzzle solver and sports enthusiast. She was a member of the Bement United Methodist Church, Ridgway United Methodist Church, and the Raleigh Baptist Church. Private Graveside services will be held at the Masonic Cemetery, Raleigh at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Bement Township Library.

Rebecca J. Manueal Gallivan of Mansfield

Rebecca J. Manuel Gallivan, 69, Champaign, formerly of Mansfield, passed away at 2:31 a.m. Saturday (May 12, 2012) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mansfield United Methodist Church, Mansfield. The Rev. Sharon Monroe will officiate. Inurnment will be in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Mansfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Gallivan was born Oct. 23, 1942, in Champaign, daughter of Kenneth “Tune” and Ellen Firke Manuel.

Survivors include her mother, Ellen Manuel, Mahomet; her significant other, Jerry Kuykendall, Champaign; one daughter, Tina (Steve) Joergens, Arcola; two grandchildren, Gerri Bernard, Australia, and Cory Joergens, Arcola; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie (Thommy) Joergens Garrison and Stan (Lacey) Joergens, both of Tennessee; two brothers, Richard (Sandy) Manuel, Mansfield, and Linden (Teri) Manuel, McKinney, Texas; and one sister, Patricia Crosby, Urbana.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Rebecca was assistant to the directors of the Illinois EPR Research Center at the University of Illinois. She was also administrative support for the International EPR/ESR Society. She also provided information for visitors and students from all around the world. 

She was an avid reader, enjoyed flower gardening, meeting new people and spending time visiting with old friends.

Lois Jean was born on December 27, 1923 in Colfax Township, in Champaign County, IL. a daughter of Charles Francis and Flossie Roach Ryan. She married Raymond E. Haynes on April 15, 1944 in Bement, IL. Surviving are her husband, Raymond E. Haynes of Bement, IL., son, Jim Haynes of Bement; daughter, Ellen (Joe) Mooney of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Abby Chirico, Joseph Hickle, Jenna Sullivan, Megan Curtis; great-grandchildren, Tyler Sullivan and Jayce Curtis; nephews, William F. (Elaine) Tracy II of Monticello, Timothy W. (Molly) Tracy of Bement; great-nieces, Katherine Sokolowski, Colleen Kremitzki, Maggie Tracy and Kathleen Tracy; great-nephews, Ryan Tracy, Patrick Tracy; great-great-nephews, Lucas and Liam Sokolowski; great-great-niece Meredith Kremitzki; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Agnes Tracy. Lois Jean graduated from Bement Township High School and was a Piatt County Landowner and retired farmer. She was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church and had worked at Haynes Auction Service of Bement from 1968 to 2004. Her family was the joy of her life. Grace V. Dempsey of Clinton

CLINTON - Grace V. Dempsey, 80, of O'Fallon, IL, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Cedar Ridge Health & Rehab Center, Lebanon, IL, after a lengthy illness. Gracie was born December 26, 1931, at Edwardsville, IL, the daughter of Charles W. and Edith, nee Noble, Edwards. After graduation from Knoxville High School, Knoxville, IL, she attended Illinois State Normal University and Western Illinois University. Gracie married the love of her life, Derrel Loren Dempsey, on August 23, 1953, at the Methodist Church in Knoxville, IL. Gracie was a devoted wife of her husband, Derrel, as he served his country in the United States Air Force for 30 years. During those years she moved with their five children to many bases all over the world, including several countries in Europe and the Philippines. Wherever they were located, Gracie was not only a loving wife and devoted mother, she was active in supporting her husband and fulfilling the duties of the wife of an Air Force officer as Derrel was promoted through the ranks to become an Air Force Colonel. Gracie was a gracious hostess and often entertained members of the armed forces in their home. Upon returning to the United States and retirement in O'Fallon, IL, Gracie was a member of First United Methodist Church of O'Fallon, where she was a member of Methodist Women and the Mary Martha Circle. She served as chairperson of the P.E.O., which she truly enjoyed. Gracie was very active in the American Parkinson Disease Association, and was part of the research effort at Washington University School of Medicine. Gracie is survived by her loving and devoted caregiver husband, Colonel Derrel L. Dempsey, USAF, retired; two sons, Darrell (Pamela) Dempsey, of Grand Prairie, TX; Guy (Anne) Dempsey, of O'Fallon, IL, three daughters; Tamera (Michael) Luth of Amarillo, TX; Minda Lawson of Madison, Wisconsin; Lisa Dempsey and her husband Klaus Grillmaier of Dusseldorf, Germany; two sisters, Charlotte McGee of Clinton, IL, and Joann Heidloff of Bloomington, IL, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Preceding Gracie in death were her parents, parents in law, two brothers and two sisters. Memorials in honor of Gracie may be made to First United Methodist Church of O'Fallon Special Building Fund. Kelly was born Dec. 23, 1961, daughter of Gerald and Jo Ella Smith Riggs in Sterling.  She married Daniel L. “Booner” Zimmerman on Feb. 13, 1982, in Bloomington. He survives.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Jo Ella Gazelle; father-in-law, Eugene “Jeep” Zimmerman; and stepmother, Darla Riggs.

Kelly worked at Country Companies as an underwriter for 10 years. She also ran an in-home day care for 15 years. Most everyone that knew Kelly has tasted her wonderful cooking, especially Rocky. For whatever occasion, she made sure that there was something homemade to eat and was especially known for her cheesy tators. No one ever left her house without being offered food and drink. She was best described by her daughter as a born hostess. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and devoted friend who will be deeply missed.

Surviving are her daughters, Linda Marie Barnhill of Bloomington; Carol Ann Hammer of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Bob Barnhill of Bloomington; Jodi Barnhill and husband, Ted Hermann of Champaign; Cari (Jeff) Hampton of Westminster, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Sean, Nick, Jessica, Emily, Freja, Wesley; great-great-grandchild, Anthony; many nieces and nephews including Ron (Lee Ann) Pollock, who helped take care of Midge. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marie Massey and Dorothy Gasser; brothers, Edward Pollock and Walt Pollock.

Kenneth M. Holmes of Mt. Pulaski

Kenneth M. Holmes, 82, of Mt. Pulaski died at 9:52 P.M. Sunday May 6th at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Kenny was born on May 9, 1929 in Mt. Pulaski, IL to Benjamin Franklin and Selma Grathwohl Holmes. He married Reva Bristow on August 15, 1954 in Mt. Pulaski. She preceded him in death on April 12, 2007. He is survived by two sons, Marty Holmes of Lincoln and Kevin (Tammy) Holmes of Bloomington, IL, one daughter Karen M. Heaten of Farmersville, IL, one brother Charles (Betty) Holmes of Mt. Pulaski, one sister Dorothy (Richard) Palmer of Wentzville, MO, and four granddaughters, Amy Fitzsimmons, Alexandria Holmes, Samantha Holmes and Cecilia Holmes. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, Bob Holmes, one sister, Mary Thompson and son in law, Shane Heaton. Kenny was a self employed carpenter and brick layer with Holmes Construction. He served in the United States Army from January of 1951 to January of 1953 during the Korean War where he received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a lifetime member of The Mt. Pulaski VFW Post # 777 and he was a member of the American Legion Post # 447 for 34 years. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday May 11, 2012 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mt. Pulaski with Mark Weber officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Burial will be at Steenbergen Cemetery in Mt. Pulaski where full military rites will be accorded. Marion W. Doc Henderson of Lincoln

Marion W. "Doc" Henderson, 89, of Lincoln, passed away May 4, 2012 at home surrounded by his family.

Wilma Mae Stanley of Latham

Wilma Mae Stanley, 57, of Latham, IL., passed away at 6:44 A.M. on Friday (05-04-2012) in her home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Lorahe M. Murphy of Farmer City

Lorahe M. Murphy, 82, Farmer City, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Thursday (May 3, 2012) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City. The Rev. Brent Roberson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery, Farmer City. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Murphy was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Hartford, Ky., to Frank and Carrie Stewart Maples. She married Henry O. Murphy on Sept. 6, 1947, in Buford, Ky. He survives in Farmer City.

Also surviving are one son, Allan Paul (Erika) Murphy, Ames, Iowa; seven daughters, Brenda (Jerry) Farney, Mahomet; Naomi Piper, Farmer City; Emma (Don) Thompson, Arvada, Colo.; Carolyn (Lonnie) Gettings, Colonial Heights, Va.; Edith (Mark) Fockler, Wooster, Ohio; Donna (Richard) Beck, El Paso; and Rita (Marty) Price, Farmer City; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Opal Smith, Masonville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.

Adlia Charles Taylor Jr. of Cerro Gordo

Adlia Charles Taylor Jr "Chalk", 92, passed away at his home on May 2, 2012. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Cerro Gordo United Methodist Church, Cerro Gordo, IL. Visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M., Friday, May 4, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Cerro Gordo, IL. Burial will be in Bement Cemetery, Bement, IL, with military rites conducted by the Cerro Gordo American Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Ave 5th floor, Norwalk CT 06851 or the Cerro Gordo American Legion Post #117 Building Fund. Charles was born Aug 23, 1919 in Milmine IL, the son of Adlia Charles Taylor and Eunice Taylor. He married Luella Jane Wiggins on April 12, 1942. Charles served in the Marine Corp during WW II and played baseball on their team. He was a member of the Cerro Gordo American Legion Post #117. After working as an electrician and ADM, he took up farming with the help and tremendous support of his wife. They enjoyed spending many winters on the beach in Florida, weeks at Branson MO, and fishing at every vacation opportunity. He was an avid athlete and sports fan of all local athletic events, and a great card player. Charles enjoyed the comradiere of all the local populace of Bement, Milmine, and Cerro Gordo. Chalk played softball until his mid 40's with the local business sponsored teams. He was preceeded in death by his dearly missed wife Luella, brother and sister-in-law Ronald and Goldie Taylor, and brother -in-law Loren Schable. He is survived by his son Jack Alan Taylor M.D. and spouse Candace, grandson Britt Taylor all of Salt Lake City UT, and grandson Bryce Taylor DDS, currently completing an Endodontics Residency at the Univ Of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and sister JoAnne Schable of Atwood, IL. Chalk and Luella also raised her nieces Melinda Blickenstaff [Wiggins] and Deborah Danner [Wiggins] as their own. He was very close to their children and acted as their grandfather.

Lillie Sue Walters of Weldon

Mrs. Walters was born on December 3, 1919 in Weldon, IL the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Saylor) Goble. She married Dean D. Walters on June 30, 1940 in Weldon, IL. He passed away May 23, 1981. Survivors include four Sons: Albert "Bud" Walters, Robert (Marsha) Walters and Jack Walters all of Weldon, IL and Paul (Joyce) Walters of Farmington, MO; five Grandchildren: Chet and Nikki Walters of Weldon, IL, Robb Walters of Springfield, IL, Wendy (Brian) DeMent of Clinton, IL and Joshua (Shae) Walters of Decatur, IL; and four Great Grandchildren: Rachel, Matthew, Jadon and Rebekah DeMent of Clinton, IL. She was preceded in death by her Parents, two Brothers: Gene and Lee, two Granddaughters and a Daughter-in-law. Mrs. Walters attended the Baptist Church in Weldon, IL. She graduated from Nixon Twp. High School in 1938. She was a member of the Town and Country Women's Club, Weldon Lions Club and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Sue edited and published a Weldon newsletter for over 25 years. She and her husband owned and operated Wil-O-Lou Restaurant and farmed in the Weldon area for over 40 years and she was a librarian for over 20 years.
