Susan L. Fitzwater of Monticello

Susan L. Fitzwater, 62, of Monticello, passed away at 2:10 p.m., on March 31, 2012 at the Bement Health Care Center. Funeral service will be held at a later date. Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello is handling the arrangements. Susan was born July 13, 1949, in Gainesville, FL the daughter of Robert and Kathryn A. (Probus) Fitzwater. Surviving is her father; Robert Fitzwater of Monticello and brother; Robert Fitzwater, Jr. of Monticello. She was preceded in death by her mother. Susan graduated from Kokomo High School in Kokomo, IN with High Honors. She attended New Mexico State University on a scholarship, graduated with High Honors, and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi. Carol DeAnne Minott of Clinton

Carol DeAnne Minott, 52, of Clinton, IL, passed away at 7:43 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, with visitation 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Westside Cemetery, Moweaqua, IL. Memorials may be made to Hawthorne Inn Activity Fund. Carol was born December 21, 1959, in Decatur, the daughter of Robert and Fern Joan (Gillespey) Minott.  Carol was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Decatur. She worked as a CNA for St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur for 25 years then at Hawthorne Inn in Clinton for 2 years, and was very caring of the elderly. Carol also had a love for animals. Surviving are her mother Fern; sisters Janet (Larry) Alred, and Cheryl Slifer; brother R. Brian (Joanni) Minott, all of Decatur; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat "Walter". Carol was preceded in death by her father Robert and brother John D. Minott. Gene R. Ferguson of Heyworth

Gene R. Ferguson, 78, of Heyworth, died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday (March 31, 2012) at Manor Court, Clinton.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Heyworth, Heyworth. The Rev. Amanda Richards will officiate. The family requests that those attending wear casual clothes. Burial will be in Heyworth Cemetery, Heyworth with military rites accorded. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heyworth Ambulance, the Heyworth Fire Department or the United Church of Heyworth.

He was born May 3, 1933, in McLean, to Clint and Loueva Evans Ferguson. He married Ella Louise Lee April 28, 1954, in Clinton. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Gary R. (Shawne) Ferguson, Heyworth; one daughter, Eva B. (David) Shepherd, Heyworth; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Clint (Dorothy) Ferguson Jr., Heyworth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Danny and Jerry Ferguson; and one daughter, Ellen Ferguson.

Gene was a U.S. Army veteran and was a self-employed contractor. He also was a custodian at Heyworth High School.

He was a member of the United Church of Heyworth and the Carl E. Miller American Legion Post 624.

Dave was the Site Superintendent, Weldon Springs State Park for 35 years.

He was instrumental in the vision and construction of Veterans Point, Weldon Springs State Park.  He was a member of the Clinton Rotary Club; Elks Lodge, Weldon Springs Foundation Member, Member of DeWitt County Restoration Assoc. He was Grand Marshall at the Clinton Christmas Parade. Past board member of the Inner City Mission Board of Springfield. He was a Chairperson for Building For Our Future Community;

He enjoyed running and had completed the Pikes Peak Marathon. He enjoyed hunting, Fishing, boating, mushroom hunting but most of all he loved spending time with his family and Grandchildren.

Lillian Ester of Farmer City

Lillian Ester, 86, Springfield, formerly of Farmer City, passed away at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday (March 27, 2012) at Heritage Health Care, Springfield.

Lillian was born May 9, 1925, daughter of John and Eva Simpson Milton in Farmer City. She married Vernon Harris in 1943. She later married Virgil Ester in 1952. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Virgil Ester.

She is survived by one daughter, Diana (David) Whitson, West Melbourne, Fla.; one son, Allen (Barbara) Harris, Wilmington; stepson, Ron (Marti) Ester, Broken Arrow, Okla.; two grandchildren, Deb Whitson and Dan (Sondra) Whitson; numerous stepgrandchildren; three brothers, Keith, Kenneth and Gerald Milton, all of Heyworth; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Paige Whitson.

Lillian was a florist for many years in Cissna Park and eventually retired from management in Stanley Home Products. She enjoyed camping, fishing and driving in the powder puff stock car races. Later in life, she enjoyed crafting, volunteering, traveling and visiting friends and family. 

Lillian will be deeply missed by her loving family and friends.

Surviving Mr. Craig are his wife of 42 years, Marjorie Mardelle; daughter Michel (Tim) Emrick, Mount Pulaski; and son, Russel (Jennifer) Craig, Lincoln; three grandchildren, Zachary and Julianna Craig and Andrew Emrick; one sister, Carol (Steve) LaDew, Waynesville; and three brothers, Wayne (Judy) Craig, California; Kenny Craig, McLean; and Russel (Roseanne) Craig, Waynesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Craig was born Dec. 13, 1950, in Lincoln, the son of Fred A. and Hazel I. Pleines Craig. He married Marjorie Mardelle Woosley on Jan. 2, 1970. She survives.

Alan was a member of Waynesville Methodist Church. He worked for 42 years for Ralston Purina and then Cargill. He was a member of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union local in Bloomington and the National Rifle Association. Alan enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Orville E. Speed Compton of Atlanta

Orville E. “Speed” Compton, 82, Atlanta, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Sunday (March 25, 2012) at his home.

The funeral for Mr. Compton will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Atlanta Christian Church, Atlanta. Maurice Stribling and Andy Johnson will officiate. Orville E. “Speed” Compton was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Eminence Township, Atlanta, the son of Claude and Rena Weatherholt Compton. He married Joyce Johnson in Atlanta on July 10, 1954. She survives.

Also surviving Mr. Compton are his daughters, Peggy (Ron) Aper and Susan (Dean) Benedict, both of Atlanta; and son Matthew (Nancy) Compton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Angie Neville, Atlanta; Elizabeth (Darrell) Miller, Danvers; Elaina (R.J.) Romani, Eureka; Lyndi (Kory) Leesman, Hartsburg; and Meghan and Rachel Compton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Kolton Neville and Raelyn Romani. 

Speed was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Wayne Compton; and one sister, Lois Compton. 

Speed was a 1947 graduate of Atlanta High School and served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of Atlanta Christian Church. Speed was a 58-year member of American Legion Post 341 and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Affairs. He retired from Hopkins Chemical Plant and farming. 

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, Cubs baseball and his grandchildren.

Wayne R. Kaufman of Argenta

Wayne R. Kaufman 81 of Argenta, Illinois passed away on March 25, 2012. Mr. Kaufman was born in Argenta, the son of Jesse H. and Esther Hiser Kaufman on October 24, 1930. He was employed as a brick mason and was a Life Member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers with more then 50 years of service. He was also a retired farmer. He spent much of his life as a volunteer serving on the Argenta Volunteer Fire Department as a fireman and later serving as board member until his death. He was a member of the Jaycees and the Argenta Civic Club volunteering numerous hours toward making improvements throughout the community of Argenta. He and his wife Evelyn were members of the Boots and Bows Square Dance Club and he also enjoyed attending auctions. Visitation will be at Calvert Funeral Home, Argenta, Wednesday, March 28, 2012 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Services will be at Calvert Funeral Home, Argenta, Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 2 p.m. Casual dress is requested. Memorials may be directed to The Argenta Fire Department or The Wayne R. Kaufman Memorial Fund. He married Ruth Evelyn Edgecombe on October 7, 1956 in Argenta, Illinois. He is survived by his wife, his son Doug Kaufman of Argenta, daughter Karen Kaufman of Argenta, son Dan Kaufman of Springfield, and son Brad (Falisha) Kaufman of Argenta. Also surviving are a sister, Betty Hilbrandt of Lexington, Kentucky, sister Wanda Lewis of Forsyth, Illinois, brother Larry (Maureen) Kaufman of Argenta, Illinois grandson Jesse Kaufman, granddaughter Myra Kaufman, granddaughter Danielle Chick, granddaughter Evelyn Jewell Kaufman, ex-daughter-in-law Teresa Kaufman, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Dale and Kenneth.

Edith B. Pope of Atlanta

Edith B. Pope, 93, of Atlanta passed away at 1:45 p.m. Friday (March 23, 2012) at The Christian Village Nursing Home, Lincoln.

The funeral for Mrs. Pope will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Atlanta Christian Church, with Mr. Maurice Stribling and Mr. Ryan Edgecombe officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Quiram Peasley Funeral Home, Atlanta.  Burial will be in the Atlanta Cemetery, Atlanta. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Atlanta Christian Church.

Edith B. Wilcoxson was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Eminence Township, Atlanta, the daughter of Roscoe and Irene Shifflet Wilcoxson. She married Keith Pope on March 2, 1937. They were married for 75 years. He survives in Lincoln.

Also surviving are one daughter, Julie (Leroy) Osborn, Atlanta; one sister, Rosemary Satterfield, Davenport, Fla.; six grandchildren, Keith Craig, Mark Craig, Jim Craig, Libby Robison, Daniel Osborn and Kristopher Osborn; 19 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Donna Craig; one sister, Lorietta Murphy; one brother, John Wilcoxson; one granddaughter, Barbara Craig; and one great-grandson, Jared Osborn.

Edith graduated from Atlanta High School in 1936. She was a lifetime member of the Atlanta Christian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Sisters in Service. She was a member of the Atlanta Eminence Home Extension and numerous card clubs. She and her husband farmed in rural Atlanta their entire lives. She also owned and operated The Villager in Atlanta for nine years.

Anna Carolyn Moore-Lasmett of Winchester

Anna Carolyn Moore-Lashmett, 78, Winchester, passed away Friday afternoon (March 23, 2012) at Dr. John Warner Hospital, Clinton.

Her funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Coonrod Funeral Home, Winchester. Burial will be in Winchester City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

She was born May 8, 1933, the daughter of Luther and Bess Welch Moore, and Clement and Lois Welch Thomas in whose home she was raised. Her parents preceded her in death.

Surviving are her children, Myra (Bob) Munds, Clinton; Jeffery (Wendy) Lashmett, Manchester; Dana Lashmett-Smith, Terry (Terrisa) Lashmett, Julie Lashmett and Amy Lashmett Davidson, all of Winchester; and Lisa (Mark) Hatton, Bloomington; a sister, Shirley Thomas Evans, Largo, Fla.; several cousins, nieces and nephews; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Carolyn was a member of Royal Neighbors of America and First Baptist Church in Winchester. She was a charter member of the Scott County Art Association. She enjoyed participating in community events. She loved her family, friends, music, gardening, art, local sports, and sunrises and sunsets.

Michael W. Hyde of Monticello

Michael W. Hyde, 39, of Monticello, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2012. Mike was born on December 12, 1972 in Urbana, the son of Dale Walter and Mary Belle (Schoonover) Hyde. He married Tonya Rigney on November 7, 2005 in Monticello. Mike is survived by his wife; Tonya Hyde of Monticello, son; Austin Allen Michael Hyde of Monticello, step-daughters; Lindsey Gail Franklin and Lauren Paige Franklin both of Monticello, stepson; Tyler Stephen Corell of Florida, parents; Dale Hyde of Champaign and Mary Hyde of Urbana, grandmother; Jean Hyde of Rantoul, sisters; Lorrie J. (Sean) Eckstein of Tolono and Paula M. (David) Gaddis of Pesotum. Mike worked as an electrician for the City of Monticello. He was a member of the Monticello Masonic Lodge #58 AF&AM, a volunteer on the Monticello Fire Department, and a Monticello Kids Club Wrestling Coach. Mike graduated from Parkland College with an Associate in Applied Science Electronic Control System Technology degree on December 20, 2003. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting, and golfing. Mike never met a stranger and he loved spending time with his family. A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Champaign with Masonic Rites and Cody Gentry officiating. No visitation. Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello is handling the arrangements. The family will welcome friends back to a site to be announced at the conclusion of the graveside service for a luncheon. Vernette E. Miller, 97, of Monticello, passed away at 4:51 p.m., Thursday, March 21, 2012 at Carle Hospital, Urbana. Vernette was born September 14, 1914, in Edwards County, IL, the daughter of Thomas and Lena (Ellen) Mitchell. She married Gerald E. "Jerry" Miller on August 15, 1939 in Fairfax, VA. He passed away on May 17, 1971. Surviving are her children; Janice (James) Olson of Crown Point, IN, Susan (Charles) Maltese of Elmhurst, and Dennis (Suzanne) Miller of Greendale, WI, daughter-in-law; Kandra Miller of Urbana, 8 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 step great grandchildren. Vernette graduated from Albion High School in 1932 and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1936. She attended graduate school at Columbia University, NYC during the summers of 1938 and 1939. She received a Masters degree from UIUC in 1965. Vernette taught high school Home Economics in Superior, WI, Argenta-Oreana, and Maroa-Forsyth High Schools. Vernette was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women, Ruth Circle. She attended exercise class there until she was 95. She was also active in the Monticello Women's Club and the Piatt County Association for Home and Community Education. She volunteered at the Piatt County Nursing Home for 30 years. She traveled extensively both within the United States and abroad and went on 27 Elderhostel (Road Scholar) Tours. John S. Pelc of Lincoln

John S. Pelc Jr., 90, of Lincoln passed away at 1:50 a.m. Saturday (March 10, 2012) at St. Clara’s Manor, Lincoln.

John Stanley Pelc Jr. was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Lincoln, the son of John Stanley Pelc Sr. and Antonia Rudzienski Pelc. He married Mineva Henning of Elkader, Iowa, on Feb. 5, 1946. She survives.

Also surviving are his two daughters, Diana (Ward) McDonald of Mahomet and Paulette (Robert) Vandercook of Phoenix; four grandsons, John Pelc Vanderhook, and Aron, Joel and Brent McDonald; three stepgrandsons; three great-granddaughters; and one brother, Joseph Pelc of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Pelc and Henry Pelc.

John attended St. Mary’s parochial school and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. He served in the Quartermaster Corps of the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador, at the time of his discharge in 1943.

He opened the Lincoln Cycle Center in 1944 at 202 S. Chicago St., and in 1959, he moved the business to 225 Clinton St. In 1996 he sold the business and entered retirement at the age of 75 after having been in business for 56 years.

He was a member of Holy Family Church and was a lifetime member of Lincoln Elks Lodge 914.

Judith Ann (Benson) McGarrigle of Cerro Gordo

Judith Ann (Benson) McGarrigle, Age 70, Passed away on Friday March 9, 2012 at the Home and Hospice Care of R.I. with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. McGarrigle. Born in Milan, Tennessee, daughter of the late Ivan and Alma Jean (Crisman) Benson. She worked in Food Service for RIARC for 18 years, prior to retiring. Judith enjoyed spending time with her family. She often stated "Her contribution to life was raising her children right, to make their contributions to the world." Judith was a firm believer in the Guardian Angel, and several times called upon her to help others in their time of need. She is survived by five children, Antoinette "Tony" McGarrigle, of Woonsocket, Angela S. McGarrigle and her companion Andrew Orr, of Maine, Joseph P. McGarrigle and wife Lisa of Pennsylvania, Mary Jean and husband Scott Fenner, of Florida, William I. McGarrigle and his wife Gina, of Massachusetts, One brother, Dean Benson, of Illinois, two sisters, Patricia Gross, of Illinois and Donna Flenner, of Illinois. Thirteen Grandchildren and six Great-Grandchildren. She is also survived by her canine companion Chloe. She was also the mother of the late Chad M. McGarrigle and sister of the late Norma Martin. June is survived by her son, William (Marilyn) Sago, Cisco; daughters, Doris (John) Hulett, Normal, and Janet (Joe) Felts, Rome, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; sister, Eileen Clarkson, Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

June was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, one sister, one son and one grandchild.

June was a cook at Cisco Grade School and worked at 4-H Memorial Camp, Monticello.

She was a member of Cisco United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Clinton Order of the Eastern Star and was a past worthy matron of Cisco OES. She was also a member of  Piatt County Home Extension.

She enjoyed quilting for the American Legion, playing games, family gatherings and birthday parties, and was proud of making the Smuckers List with Willard Scott in honor of her 100th birthday.

Charles D. Schroth, 78, of Latham, IL died at 11:25 A.M. Sunday March 4, 2012 at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Mr. Schroth was born March 9, 1933 at the Deaconess Hospital in Decatur to Irvin Earl and Wardie Roselda Coates Schroth. He married Mary K. Drabing on June 2, 1956 in Mt. Pulaski. She survives. He is also survived by three sisters, Norma Shehorn of Mt. Pulaski, IL, Carol (Larry) Alsup of Beason, IL, and Sonia (Paul) Heft of Kenney, IL, as well as twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elizabeth Hawk, brother Dean Schroth, son in law Dennis Aughenbaugh, great granddaughter Jule Russo and great grandson Jacob Green. Charles was a retired farm laborer, a member and past Commander of the Sons of the American Legion Post #447 of Mt. Pulaski, a Mt. Pulaski and Chestnut baseball little league coach, he was the last surviving member of the Board of Directors who had the foresight and who purchased the ground for the Warrensburg Sportsman Club, Past President of the Chestnut Men's Club, and a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and never missed a game. A celebration of life service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with Mark Angel officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to the Caralee Alice Thomas Memorial Fund.

Caralee was born Sept. 11, 1939, in Lincoln, the daughter of Arthur Ferguson and Lena Maybelle (Foster) Grigsby. She married Theodore Thomas on May 3, 1973, in Lincoln. He died Sept. 7, 1991.

Survivors include daughters, Tamira Smith-Ryan, Victorville, Calif., and Holly Thomas (Eric Young), Clinton; grandchildren, Jailee and Race Young, and Jack and Patrick Ryan. Also surviving is her beloved cat, Jasper.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Leonard Earl and Lena Golden Foster; and one son, Toby Jed Thomas.

Caralee was retired from Wallace Computer Co., Clinton.
