John William Hassebrock Jr., 95, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 2:37 p.m., at Symphony of Lincoln.

John was born on August 14, 1918 in Eagle River, WI, the son of John and Anna Maxheimer Hassebrock. He married Mabel Ruwe on January 25, 1942 in Lincoln. She preceded him in death in 2003.

Surviving are his children: Eugene (Marsha) of Beason; Alfred (Doretta) of Kenney; twins Edward (Wanda) of Lincoln and Edwin (Nancy) of Armington; and Lorraine (Ken) Wilmert of Bloomington. He is also survived by sisters: Lois (Wilbur) Ruwe, Ethel Hein, brother Glen (Muriel); sister in laws Dolly and Erna Hassebrock. John has 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; 22 step great grandchildren; and 10 step great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters, and 1 great granddaughter.

John was an U.S. Army Veteran. He was a farmer for many years and also worked at the Chevrolet dealership in Lincoln.

John was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He volunteered at the Midwest Food Bank of Bloomington. John was a member of the Antique Car Club and Antique Tractor Club.

John loved helping people and working in his garden. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends.

Funeral Services for John will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln with Rev. David Ramirez officiating. Helen was born in Argenta, IL on Feb. 17, 1919, the daughter of Perry M. and Anna (Parr) Hilbrant. She attended the Argenta Public Schools, graduating salutatorian from the class of 1937. She attended Brown’s Business College in Decatur, IL. Helen was employed by the Jenkins Music Co. of Decatur, IL for a short time, she was also a former employee of The Gerber State Bank of Argenta for thirteen years. 

Helen was a lifetime member of the Argenta United Methodist Church, past secretary of the administrative board, member and secretary of United Methodist Women for many years.

Helen loved music. She was a violinist and played for the church, at weddings and played for dances and many other functions in the area over the years. She played with a five piece orchestra for high school parties and dances. At one time, Helen also played with a string group from Decatur, IL.

Helen married Kenneth “Buck” Kaufman on Feb. 25, 1950 in the home of Rev. F. E. Blimline of Ridott, IL. Kenneth died Jan. 4, 1992. She is survived by her sons, Brian K. Kaufman of Argenta, IL and Rodney G. Kaufman and wife Michelle of Oreana, IL; step-grandchildren, Rob Johnson of Ypsilanti, MI and Jennifer Johnson (Eric Ryder) of Grand Rapids, MI; step-great granddaughter, Austyn Ryder of Grand Rapids, MI. Also surviving are her brother-in-law, Larry (Maureen) Kaufman of Argenta, IL; sisters-in-law, Betty Hilbrant of Lexington, KY, Pauline Kaufman of Argenta, IL, Evelyn Kaufman of Argenta, IL and Wanda Lewis of Forsyth, IL; along with 13 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister: Carol Acton, brother: Mervil Glenn Hilbrant and brothers-in law Dale Kaufman and Wayne Kaufman.

Betty J. Woods, 85, of Argenta, IL, formerly of Decatur, IL passed away at 10:53 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 25, 2013) at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Mrs. Woods was born on August 14, 1928 in Monticello, IL, the daughter of William and Lela May Henson. She was a homemaker and worked as a nurse’s aid many years ago at Monticello Hospital. She was a former member of Lakeview Baptist Church and a current member of Galilee Baptist Church. Betty enjoyed playing Bingo. She married Charles T. Woods, who preceded her in death in 1977.

Surviving are her children: Charles Alvin Woods and his wife Debbie, Teresa Downs and her husband Donnie, Kathryn Brubeck and her boyfriend Steve Pociask, James Woods and his wife Krisa; brother: Gene Henson; many grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Leola Roy Summers, 92, Quincy, Ind., formerly of Waynesville, passed away Tuesday (Aug. 20, 2013) at his home.

He was born Nov. 12, 1920, near Wapella, and was the son of the late Edward Hamilton and Nellie Kraft Summers.

He married Mary D. Cisco of Waynesville on July 30, 1940. She survives.

He is also survived by his children, Norma Stocker, Quincy, Ind.; Sandra Evans, Kentucky; Mary A. Eye, Texas; Peggy Simpson, Florida; Larry Summers, Quincy, Ind.; Dale Summers, Mo.; and John Summers, Quincy, Ind. Other survivors are several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Roy Summers.

Roy was a member of the Cloverdale Church of Christ, Quincy, Ind., where he attended every time the doors were open.

A memorial services is planned for today at Cloverdale Church of Christ.

Sanford T. “Sandy” Searl, 71, of Argenta passed from this life Saturday (Aug. 17, 2013) at 5:24 a.m. at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2155 N. Oakland, Decatur, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be Tuesday evening at Calvert Funeral Home, Argenta, from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be held at Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, following the funeral.

Sandy was born in Chicago on Sept. 23, 1941, to Stacy and Edna LaBrash Searl. He was raised in Galesburg, where he graduated from Galesburg High School. He attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, majoring in engineering and was employed at Caterpillar Inc. for 37 years, retiring as a tool designer.

He married Connie Lading of Strasburg on Sept. 22, 1963, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg. Sandy loved building and flying model airplanes, fishing in Ely, Minn., and traveling and hiking in the Rocky Mountains. He was a loving and devoted Christian husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Connie; his daughters, Sherri (Scott) Hays, Argenta, and Stacia (Doug) Dowell, Bloomington; five grandchildren, Cameron (fiancee, Lauren Woodworth) Hays, Dodge City, Kan.; Olivia (fiance, Ian Rhode) Hays and Byron Hays, Argenta; and Will and Christian Dowell, Bloomington.

Also surviving are his sisters, Arline (Ron) Pearson and Janice (Dale) Hatch; and several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Kay (fiance, Howard Dust) Halford, Joyce (Irvin) Searl and Jean (Larry) Lading.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeffrey Searl; his brother, Irvin Searl; and brothers-in-law, Larry Lading and Larry Halford.

Elmotis L. “Ellie” Stewart, 94, Kenney, died at 4:17 a.m. Friday (Aug. 16, 2013) at The Christian Village, Lincoln.

She was born March 31, 1919, in Kenney, a daughter of Edmund St. Elmo Thompson and Sarah Brelsfoard Thompson. She married Howard Oscar Stewart on March 21, 1939, in Missouri. He died July 7, 2004.

She is survivied by her children, Gary Howard Stewart (Christine), Kenney; Linda (Silverman) Phillippi (LeRoy), Kenney and Paris; five grandchildren, Virginia Folkman (Jeff), Danville; Rhonda Daniels (Glen), St. Joseph; Sarah Silverman (Matthew), Urbana; Richard Stewart (Josie), Galion, Ohio; and Laura Dore’ (Steve), Houston, Texas; five great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Niola Daily, Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

She was a member of Kenney Christian Church.

Ellie worked at IAA in Bloomington before retiring in 1984. She and her husband liked going to auctions, traveling and reading.

Dorothy M. Schopp, 77, Heyworth, died at 4:12 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 15, 2013) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

Her Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal, with Monsignor Eric Powell officiating. Interment will be at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Normal. Dorothy was born July 27, 1936, in Colfax, a daughter of Henry and Mary Zula Brown Fackler. She married Lyle A. Schopp on Oct. 1, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Colfax. He died Feb. 4, 2013.

She is survived by her children, Cathy (Gregg) Winters, Steven (Pam) Schopp and Michael (Melinda) Schopp; six grandchildren, Kyle Winters, Kelsey Tuttle, Bryan Schopp, Christina Schopp (fiance, Timothy Margherio), Dustin Schopp and Corey Schopp; three great-grandchildren, Kaylin Winters, Jace Winters and Landen Schopp; sisters, Louise Coffey, Regina Johnson, Bernadine Hilgeman and Verna Bett; her special friends, Bill and Doris Wherry and Richard and Liz McGuire; and her best friend, Mary Ellen Schoon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and two sisters.

Dorothy was a member of Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal, and a member of McLean County Farm Bureau, Normal. She loved reading and attending auctions at Wapella Auction House with her husband, Lyle. She was an avid bowler in her younger years and enjoyed helping her husband on the family farm.

Dorothy and Lyle enjoyed traveling to Europe and Hawaii. They raised chickens and had an egg delivery route. Dorothy enjoyed baking and shared her talent by providing desserts for the funeral committee at Epiphany Church. She was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family and special times she shared with her four sisters.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Alva Forrest Kimler, 85, Argenta, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 14, 2013) at Heartland Health Care Center, Decatur.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvert Funeral Home, Argenta, with the Rev. Kate Pyle officiating. The family requests casual attire. Interment will be at Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, with military honors.

He was born April 26, 1928, in Glenavon, son of Ben Kimler and Mae Moulden. He married June Colgate on Dec. 28, 1952, in Urbana. She passed away Feb. 23, 1992.

Surviving are sons, Richard (Donna Lanter) Kimler and Philip (Lorie Agee) Kimler, both of Argenta; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kimler was a retired Argenta-Oreana High School teacher. He was a former scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 31 in Argenta. He was a member of the Argenta Presbyterian Church and also served as a deacon, elder and trustee. He also was a member of American Legion Craig Reed Post 1181 in Cisco and a U.S. Army veteran.  

He was a treasurer and a trustee of Argenta-Oreana Public Library. Mr. Kimler was a charter member, treasurer and on the board of directors for the Prairie River Historical Society.   

Ivan Wesley Porter, 82, of Maroa died 10:19 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 11, 2013) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Ivan was born Nov. 20, 1930, in Lovington, the son of Lowell C. and Lenora E. Watson Porter. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran and retired from Mueller Co. He farmed and enjoyed going to auctions. He was a member of Maroa Christian Church. He married Norma R. Koshinski on April 30, 1955, in Decatur.

Surviving are his wife; children, Debra Kay (Dick) Morstatter of Oreana; Linda Sue Harrington of Decatur; Randy Lee Porter of Maroa; Janice Drue (Mark) Collins of Edwardsville; Kimberly Ann (Michael) Earls of New Canton; sister, Joy (David) Gardner of Maroa; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.

John Harold Francis Weaver, 57, Clinton, passed away at 7:37 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 11, 2013) at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur.

His memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Life Builders Church of God, Decatur, with the Rev. Tim Lusitana officiating. There will be no visitation. John was born Aug. 27, 1955, in Flushing, N.Y., the son of Lawrence Owen and Mary Patricia Mahr Weaver. He graduated from Voorheesville High School in 1973. He entered the Navy in 1973, and served until 1982. He married Donna Robin Chandler on March 24, 1979. She survives.

John is also survived by two brothers, Larry Weaver and Patrick Weaver, both of New York; one sister, Cathy Cohen, Connecticut; two sons, Sean Eric (Brenda) Weaver, Decatur, and Mark William (Amanda) Weaver, Springfield, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Ayden Harold Weaver and Eliseva Jo-Anne Weaver.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harold.

John spent his working career at the Clinton Power Station from May 1982 to August 2013. He was avidly involved in the community through coaching his sons’ YMCA soccer and basketball teams. He also served as a scout leader for troops in Clinton and Farmer City. He was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 51 and American Legion Post, Farmer City.

Bobbie J. Chase 83, of Argenta, IL passed away at 4:55 p.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 in her residence.

A graveside service to celebrate Bobbie’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, IL. Bobbie was born August 10, 1930, in Marietta, Mississippi the daughter of Ivy and Emma (Gann) Woodard. She married Oliver Wendell Chase on May 23, 1957. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1989. She worked as a nurse in hospitals in the Mississippi and St. Louis areas before coming to Illinois. She was affiliated with the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. She had volunteered with Senior Meals Program in Argenta and had formerly served as a Den Mother in Cub Scouting. She also preformed Home Health Care in the Argenta area.

Surviving is her sons: John Chase of Argenta and Barry Chase of Kankakee, IL; brother Jimmy Woodard and his wife Hilda of Saltillo, Mississippi. Also surviving are six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother. The family wishes to extend her special neighbors for all their care and compassion shown to Bobbie and the family during her illness.

She was born Oct. 4, 1949, in Clinton, a daughter of Raymond O. Carter and Bernice F. (Nelson) Carter.

She is survived by her children, Darla (David) Huston, Clinton; Sherrie Strange, Madisonville, Ky.; Tony (Brandi) Carter, Clinton; grandchildren, Brandi Crispen, Jeremy Huston, Cody Carter, Bowe Carter, Miranda Strange; sisters, Sharon McGhee, Donna Carter and Vivian (Russell) Crutcher, all of Clinton; brothers, Roger (Pat) Carter, Joliet, and Russell (Bernadine) Carter, Springfield; four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Francis Wickenhauser; one brother-in-law; one son-in-law; and one niece.

She was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle, Heyworth. She worked many years at the Eureka-Williams Co., Bloomington.

Her grandchildren were the light of her life.

Robert Russell “Bob” Postlewait, 82 of Bement, IL. passed away at 7:42 P.M. on Friday, August 9, 2013, at his residence in Bement, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Bement United Methodist Church, 249 N. Piatt St., Bement, IL., The Rev. E. Paul Unger will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until time of services on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at the Bement Township Cemetery, Bement, IL. with Masonic Graveside Prayer by the Bement Masonic Lodge #365 A. F. & A.M. Bob was born on September 14, 1930 in Decatur, IL. a son of Russell H. and Mae McPherson Postlewait. He married Martha Turney on November 19, 1949, in Bement, IL. and she survives of Bement, IL. Survivng children include; Stephen (Mary Sue) Postlewait of Bement, IL., Jane (John) Corradetti of New Lenox, IL., and Sam (Sue) Postlewait of Mt. Zion, IL. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren; Robert (Laura) and Russell Postlewait, John Robert, Kathryn, and Carolyn Corradetti, Jamie, Jason, and Jared Postlewait, and a great grandson, Everett Postlewait. Also survivng is a sister; Jane Ellen (Scott) Wilkinson of San Antonio, TX., as well as many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister; Nancy Mae Coffee.

Bob was a life-long resident of Bement. He graduated from Bement High School in 1948 and attended Milikin University. He farmed for over 50 years in the community. He served on the Bement School Board and was chairman of the Bement Foundation since its inception in 1997. He was a Bement Township trustee and also served 25 years as a commissioner for the Lake Fork Special Drainage District.

Bob was a lifetime member of the Bement United Methodist Church and served on numerous committees. He was a 50 + year member of the Bement Masonic Lodge # 365 A.F. & A.M., Ansar Shrine, Royal Arch Masons, and the Springfield Consistory. Bob dearly loved spending time with his family, his friends and on the farm.

Eula Mae Metzger, 83, of Oreana, IL passed away on Saturday (Aug. 3, 2013) in Hickory Point Christian Village.

A service to celebrate Eula Mae’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 6, 2013) at Dawson & Wikoff North Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Moweaqua, IL. Memorial contributions may be directed to Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Mrs. Metzger was born on March 23, 1930 in the home of her grandparents Walter and Deborah Humphrey in Moweaqua, IL. She was the daughter of Wayne Elliott and Ruth May (Humphrey) Hays. She graduated from Moweaqua High School Class of 1947 and later attended Brown’s Business College in Decatur, IL. She married Arnold John Metzger on August 15, 1962 in St. James Catholic Church, Decatur, IL. Eula Mae worked for 20 years at A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company in Decatur, IL. She was a former member of First Baptist Church, Moweaqua, IL where she was a member of the choir, and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She is a current member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Decatur, IL. She was Past President and active member for 40 years of Decatur Christian Woman’s Club. Eula Mae held many offices in this organization, including being Decorating Chairman for 20 years, making individual table decorations as well as centerpieces with her committee for 150 or more ladies each month. Her husband, Arnold, also spent many hours helping with these projects. She was Past President and member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Served many years as Room Mother for Mike’s class and helped with Fun Fairs and other activities in the Argenta/Oreana School. She was Past President and member of Oreana Home Extension and later Mt. Zion Unit of Home and Community Education. She also served as a Past President of Macon County Home and Community Education. She was a charter member of the A.E. Staley Women’s Club and a member of Tacusah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Kiwanianne Club of Decatur, IL. She was an active member of 2 Bunco clubs in Oreana.

Eula Mae loved crafts, gardening, spending time with her son and daughter-in-law and especially with the light of her life, her grandson, Wade. She enjoyed traveling, especially day trips. Eula Mae was known for the beautiful packages she wrapped, especially for birthdays and Christmas. She was a wonderful example of a loving wife, mother and a true Christian.

Surviving are her husband: Arnold John Metzger of Oreana, IL; son: Michael John Metzger and his wife Natalie of Decatur, IL; grandson: Wade Michael Metzger of Decatur, IL; sister: Von Gregory of Moweaqua, IL; 10 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law: James and Rosemary Hays and her brother-in-law: Mark Gregory.

Richard W. “Rick” Harper, 58, of White Heath, passed away at 12:54 a.m., August 3, 2013 at the Presence Covenant Hospital, Urbana.

Rick was born on October 29, 1954 in Champaign IL, the son of Richard A. “Dick” and Judith A. “Judy” (Bruhn) Harper.

Surviving are his brother; Steve (Lori) Harper of White Heath, sisters; Deb (Greg) Valentine and Beth (Matt) Bennett both of Monticello, and he was a uncle and great uncle to several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rick worked as a railroad conductor. He was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, the Model Railroad, NARCOA, Royal Neighbors, and the Monticello Railway Museum. Rick enjoyed bus trips, time spent vacationing, fishing, and boating in Northern Wisconsin and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers fan. Rick shared a special love for Morgan and his cat “Kit”.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday August 8, 2013 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello. A graveside service will be held in Ingram Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., Friday August 9, 2013.

Fred Norman Wentworth, 90, of Warrensburg died at 1:53 p.m. Friday (Aug. 2, 2013) at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. Burial will be in Illini Cemetery, Warrensburg. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Fred was born Sept. 12, 1922, the son of Clifford “CJ” and Lucy Schroeder Wentworth in Austin Township, where he resided for his 90 years. He married Evelyn Ferrill on May 10, 1946, in Argenta.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Evelyn of Warrensburg; sons, Norman (Cookie) Wentworth, Decatur; and Dennis (Cathy) Wentworth, Downs; daughter, Sharon (John) Dew, Monmouth; grandchildren, Jeff Jensen, Michael Jensen, Nathan Wentworth, Laura Anderson, Stacy Wentworth, Tory Wentworth, Jacob Dew, Anthony Dew, Kristin Dew and Geri Hipple; great-grandchildren, McKenna, Owen, Josie, Sam, Alex and Jacob; brother, George Wentworth Sr., Decatur; sister, Ruth (Mas) Kameya, Oceanside, Calif.; and son-in-law, Paul Jensen, Maroa.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diane Jensen; sister, Mildred Carpenter; and brothers, John and Merle Wentworth.

Fred was a retired farmer, having farmed in the Warrensburg area for 67 years. He was a member of Warrensburg United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher for 18 years. As co-chairman of the Building Committee, he helped build the present church in 1967. He was a member of the Macon County Farm Bureau, treasurer of the Austin Township Land Commission for 40 years and a 4-H leader. Fred served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II and always maintained an interest in flying.

He was known for his warm smile and the ability to make everyone feel special. Fred always had an open door for friends and family but especially loved taking the grandchildren for vanilla ice cream anytime.
