Fred Norman Wentworth of Warrensburg

Fred Norman Wentworth, 90, of Warrensburg died at 1:53 p.m. Friday (Aug. 2, 2013) at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. Burial will be in Illini Cemetery, Warrensburg. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to Barclay Public Library, Warrensburg or Warrensburg United Methodist Church.

Fred was born Sept. 12, 1922, the son of Clifford “CJ” and Lucy Schroeder Wentworth in Austin Township, where he resided for his 90 years. He married Evelyn Ferrill on May 10, 1946, in Argenta.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Evelyn of Warrensburg; sons, Norman (Cookie) Wentworth, Decatur; and Dennis (Cathy) Wentworth, Downs; daughter, Sharon (John) Dew, Monmouth; grandchildren, Jeff Jensen, Michael Jensen, Nathan Wentworth, Laura Anderson, Stacy Wentworth, Tory Wentworth, Jacob Dew, Anthony Dew, Kristin Dew and Geri Hipple; great-grandchildren, McKenna, Owen, Josie, Sam, Alex and Jacob; brother, George Wentworth Sr., Decatur; sister, Ruth (Mas) Kameya, Oceanside, Calif.; and son-in-law, Paul Jensen, Maroa.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diane Jensen; sister, Mildred Carpenter; and brothers, John and Merle Wentworth.

Fred was a retired farmer, having farmed in the Warrensburg area for 67 years. He was a member of Warrensburg United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher for 18 years. As co-chairman of the Building Committee, he helped build the present church in 1967. He was a member of the Macon County Farm Bureau, treasurer of the Austin Township Land Commission for 40 years and a 4-H leader. Fred served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II and always maintained an interest in flying.

He was known for his warm smile and the ability to make everyone feel special. Fred always had an open door for friends and family but especially loved taking the grandchildren for vanilla ice cream anytime.
