David M. Dougherty Sr. of Decatur

David M. Dougherty, Sr., 71, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011. David "Dave" Dougherty Sr. was born November 14, 1939, in Decatur, the son of John R. and Wilma Kathryn (Buzan) Dougherty. He was an active member of St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church. He owned and operated several family businesses including the D&D Shell/Marathon service stations for 50 years, located at Grand & Water, until his retirement in 2007. The 74-year-old family business was his passion and he valued each and every customer. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, boating, and playing cards at the family's lake house in Effingham, IL. He also shared his love of cars with his grandkids; working at the station and teaching them to drive his old cars. Dave married Karen Alsbury September 19, 1959 and she preceded him in death on April 24, 1987. He then married Joan E. Bruner on May 15, 1998 and she survives. Surviving is his wife, Joan; sons: David Jr. (Lori) Dougherty, Jr., Daniel (Kathy) Dougherty and Darryl (Alycia) Dougherty; grandchildren: Gail (Brad) Osborne, David "Michael" Dougherty III, Samantha Dougherty, Dustin Dougherty, Sean Dougherty, Sarah Dougherty and Grayson Dougherty; aunt: Delores Marty; step-children: William (Kim) Bronson and Charles (Tammy) Bronson; step-grandchildren: Aaron Bronson and Zachery Bronson; brothers: Jack (Sylvia) Dougherty and Jim Dougherty; brothers-in-law: Dennis (Eleanor) Alsbury, James Bruner, Robert (Donna) Bruner and John Bruner; sisters-in-law: Kathy (Jim) Alsbury, Sue Bruner, Sonja Kay Ellis and Billie (Kenney) Raleigh; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Karen; son, Douglas; daughter, Debra and sister, Kay. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home, vigil prayer service at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church, Rev. Dennis Kollross, celebrant. Burial will take place in Harristown Cemetery. The family of David M. Dougherty, Sr., is being served by the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2801 N. Monroe St., Decatur, IL.
