Martha Jane Halsema of Bloomington

Martha “Jane” Halsema, 81, of Bloomington died at 4:48 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 1, 2011) at her home.

A private graveside service will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal, with Monsignor Douglas Hennessy officiating. There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society. Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Bloomington, the daughter of George and Viola Frazier Callahan. She married Warren Lee “Bud” Halsema on Aug. 7, 1948, in Bloomington. He died Dec. 16, 1994.

Surviving are two daughters, Erin (Doug) Poag, Bloomington, and Barbara (Lane) O’Connor, Towanda; six grandchildren, Warren Poag, Margaret “Meg” Poag, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Poag, Erin O’Connor-Fabrizio, Ryan O’Connor and Mark Krug; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Nathan Poag; and two sisters, Gertrude Briggs and Margaret Crawford.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and George Callahan; and a sister, Minnie (Jack) Lower.

Jane was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Bloomington.

She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose greatest joy in life was taking care of her family.
