Gilbert L. “Woody” Wood, Jr., 83 of Decatur, IL formerly of Clinton, IL passed away 10:54 AM May 20, 2025 at Hickory Point Christian Village, Forsyth, IL.

Graveside services will be 2 PM, Thursday, May 29, 2025 at IOOF Township Cemetery, Moweaqua, IL with Rev. Andy Maxwell officiating. There will be no visitation. The family entrusted Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Decatur Memorial Foundation (DMF) - Hospice: Sharing Wishes. 

Gilbert was born July 15, 1941, in Springfield, IL, the son of Gilbert Leroy and Nora Irene (Watkins) Wood. He married the love of his life, Sharon K. Boyer, December 2, 1961 in Maroa, IL. They had many adventures together, raising two daughters and traveling their way across the continental US and Europe. Woody was athletic in his youth and for many years kept active as a referee. He was an avid Cardinals fan his whole life, often advising the coaches and players from his recliner. He loved his annual fishing trips to Canada and visiting his family in Maine. In his retirement he became an avid bird carver and loved sharing his craft with others at the Apple ‘n Pork Festival. Golfing with his friends kept him active and outdoors. Woody never met a stranger and was always willing to talk to or help others in need.  His heart was huge and his life was happy.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Wood, Decatur, IL; daughters, Pam Chernesky, Farmington, ME and Dana Dowling, Wilton, ME; two grandchildren, Hope Chernesky, Farmington, ME and Holly Dowling, Wilton, ME; and brother, Gary Wood, Decatur, IL

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Shirley Wood, and brother, Ben Wood.
