Ruth Ann Lowers

Ruth Ann (Colbert) Lowers, age 76, of Clinton passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 2:16 pm at Manor Care, Clinton. After a short battle with cancer, she moved to hospice care one week prior to her death. She passed with family by her side.

Ruth Ann was born to Paul and Kathryn (Barnett) Colbert on November 20, 1947 in Macomb, IL.  Her father called her “Stumpy” as he told her and many that they found her on a stump and brought her home.

Robert “Ted” Lowers and Ruth Ann Colbert were married on August 21, 1966 in Easton, IL. They moved to Clinton in 1969 where they made their life together welcoming three children. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

Ruth was co-owner of Water Tower Antiques. She later co-owned with her husband, Lowers Furniture; R.A. Lowers Catering, and Ted’s Garage. She worked for more than 30 years at the DeWitt County Courthouse. Ruth retired from her role as administrative assistant to the Honorable Judge Karle Koritz on September 19, 2024.

Ruth cared deeply for her family, friends and community. She was an active volunteer in the community, working closely over the years with DeWitt County 4-H, Welfare League, Celebrate Clinton, Dove, Inc, and a member of Clinton United Methodist Church. Ruth served on the Board of Education of the Clinton Unit School District #15 for 16 years. She was instrumental in the start and a Charter Member of the Clinton Community Educational Foundation (CCEF) which began in 2006. She greatly enjoyed seeing the impact CCEF was able to make in providing classroom grants to teachers, supporting student enrichment activities and inspired by young people who sought scholarships to further their education. She loved family traditions and hosting in her home. She took great pride in honoring other families’ special moments through her catering business.

A dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, she could be seen anywhere from a dance recital to ringside at a cattle show, a grade school soccer game to a college softball game and all the various places and activities in between. She loved spending time with family and friends at college football games including the Illini and Northwestern.

She is survived by her husband, Ted; sister, Kay Stelter, Havana; children: Katy Arnold, Clinton; Jennifer (Sean) Black, Springfield; Ben (Nicole) Lowers, Clinton  and Sam Arnold, Clinton. Grandchildren include: Grace & Isabelle Arnold; Maya & Claire Black, Sophia & Sierra Lowers (great grandchildren: Corbyn and Maeora), Rylee(Austin) Matheny; and Bryden & Aidyn Barber.
