David Earl Benson I, of Clinton, IL, the love of my life for 40 years, passed away peacefully at our home on September 21, 2024. Born on January 12, 1946, to Christyne (Sullivan) and Earl Benson in Cisco, IL.
He is survived by Cheryl of Clinton, IL, and his children: Michelle Valentine (Michael) of Kenney, IL, David Earl Benson II of Clinton, IL, Nicole Countryman (Wayne) of Bolivar, MO, and Amy Dietz of Clinton, IL. He also leaves behind grandchildren Lauren, Andrew, Shane, Nicolas, Felicia, Jessica, Faith, and Ella, as well as nine great-grandchildren, and siblings Linda Lamb of Indiana, Kenny Benson (Nancy) of Deland, IL, and Rebecca Askren (Dan) of Argenta, IL. Preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Sharon, and brother Robert.
David retired as a skilled welder from UA Local 137 Plumbers and Steamfitters, contributing to the construction of the local Clinton power plant. A special thanks to his best friend and coworker, Bruce Fletcher for being there.
A passionate outdoorsman, he loved boating, fishing, hunting, and skeet shooting, competing for several years with the Warrensburg Sportsman’s Club. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge in Clinton and cherished teaching his children and grandchildren various skills, from building Cub Scout derby cars to fishing. The garden owl held a special place in his heart, primarily because it was a beloved treasure of his granddaughter Ella.
Grandpa Butch will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
