Phyllis Joan (Scott) Lappin, of Clinton, IL, was the daughter of John Quinton and Ruth (Willson) Scott. Born April 11, 1930 in Paxton, IL. Forever in our memories but now no longer with us, on the evening of August 23 2024. Joan Lappin has passed away. Joan’s father was an Agricultural Teacher and became the Agriculture Extension Advisor in Clay and Douglas Counties. She attended elementary school and graduated high school in Tuscola, IL. Joan’s mother and father were graduates of the University of Illinois and in 1952 Joan also graduate from the University of Illinois. Joan taught Home Economics at Minonk, IL. She met Arthur J. Lappin of Johnston City, IL while there were both attending U of I in Champaign. Joan married Arthur, also a graduate of the University of Illinois, June 8, 1952. Art Lappin taught agriculture at St. Jospeh, IL. The couple moved to Las Cruces, NM where Art served as Army Corporal in the 1st Guided Missile Brigade at White Sandy, New Mexico.
In 1954 the couple returned to Urbana and Art finished his Masters Degree from the University of Illinois. They moved from Urbana to the Scott Farm, west of Wapella, IL in 1955 and began farming the family farm. In 1965, Joan and Art moved to the Willson Farm, Northeast of Clinton, IL.
Art passed away April 2000 and son, John Lappin, began farming the family farm. Joan stayed living at the farmhouse northeast of Clinton until 2011 when she moved to the city of Clinton and her grandson moved to the Willson farmhouse.
Joan Lappin was active in several local churches, the Wapella Christian Church for ten years and in the Prairie Center Methodist Church for fifteen years and for the past 35 years, has been active in the Clinton United Methodist Church. She was very interested in genealogy research and was a member of the local Daughters of American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary and the Elks. She was a member of the DeWitt County Homemakers Extension for 60 years. She was a former 4H leader and member of the Idel Hour Club (now bimonthly Pinochle Club). She was a member of the Museum Association and active in the annual Apple and Pork Festival. She held an interest in crafts and antiques, selling them in seven various area shops through the years. She loved to travel and visited 49 of the 50 states and parts of Canada.
Survivors include her children, Larry (Debbie) Lappin, Clinton, IL; John (Julie) Lappin, Wapella, IL; Jim (Pat) Lappin, Randolph, NJ; and Nancy (Joe) Primeaux, Clinton, IL, along with fourteen grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren, one sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruth Scott; husband, Arthur J. Lappin; brother, John Q. Scott; and sister-in-law, Christine. Lappin ‘in-laws’ in southern Illinois, Sylvia Meyers, Mary Kay Lappin, Judy Lappin, Monroe Lappin, Don Lappin, and Frank Lappin.
Services will be 10 A.M. Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the United Methodist Church, Clinton, IL with Pastor Darrell Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Mausoleum Park Cemetery, Clinton, IL. Visitation will be 9 – 10 A.M. Saturday at the church. The family has entrusted Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL with arrangements.
