Richard W. Smith 97 of Farmer City, Illinois passed away 4:10 A.M. June 20, 2019 at Farmer City Rehab and Health Care, Farmer City, Il.

 

Private Graveside Services will be held at DeLand Cemetery, DeLand, Il. Calvert Funeral Home, DeLand is in charge of arrangements.

 

Memorials may be directed to the Farmer City American Legion.

 

Richard was born March 3, 1922 in DeLand, IL the son of Willard W. and Frankie Fawn (Plankenhorn) Smith. He married Mary Ellen Sprague March 26, 1950 in DeLand, IL. She passed away March 22, 2018.

 

Survivors include his children, Brenda Cox, Farmer City, IL and Rodney W. Smith, Farmer City, IL; 1 grandson, Todd D. (Lindsey) Cox, Decatur, IL; 3 great-grandchildren: Tanner, Madeline, and Ainsley Cox; and 1 sister, Beverly Clemons, Decatur, IL.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister, Ruby Anderson.

 

Richard was a WW II Veteran serving on the USS Bowfin Submarine. He was a farmer, a DeWitt Co. Tax Assessor, a member of the Clinton Elks, and a member of the Farmer City American Legion for over 70 years.
