Donald L. North, 93 of Clinton, IL, passed away surrounded by family, 2:00 PM April 3, 2018, at Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal, IL.

 

Donald was born April 21, 1924, in Clinton, IL the son of Erva C. and Dorothy (West) North. He married Connie (Suedmeier) North July 22, 1944, in Hollywood, CA. She passed away in 1976. 

 

Survivors include his son: John W. (Lynn) North, Edwardsville, IL; daughter: Julie E. North, Clinton, IL; grandchildren: Robb (Becky) Walters and Wendy (Brian) Walters DeMent, Clinton, IL, Ryan (Tina) North , Minneapolis, MN and Erin (Dave) Schiek, St. Louis, MO; great grandchildren: Rachel, Matthew, Jadon and Rebekah DeMent, Zander North, Emerson and William Schiek; brothers: William North and James (Martha) North, Clinton, IL; and son-in-law: Robert Walters, Weldon, IL.

 

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; daughter: Marsha North Walters; sister-in-law: Glenda North; two granddaughters: Carrie Elizabeth Walters and Amy Lynn North; and wife Jean Brown North.

 

Donald graduated from Clinton Community High School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Marine Corp. He was the last surviving veteran of the twelve Clinton boys who rode the Interurban to Peoria to enlist in the services. As a tank commander with the 5th Marine Division, he was wounded during the invasion of Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart.

 

Donald was employed as an industrial engineer at Borg-Warner Corp. in Decatur, IL retiring in 1989. He was a lifetime member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Clinton, IL. He was a former avid golfer. 

 

The family would like to thank Hawthorne Inn, Clinton, IL and the staff of the progressive unit at Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center for providing excellent care during this difficult time. 

 

Visitation will be 10 – 11 AM Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the First Church of the Nazarene, Clinton, IL. Services will follow at 11 AM Saturday at the church with Rev. Michael Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Mausoleum Park Cemetery, Clinton, IL with Military Honors. Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL is in charge of arrangements.

 

Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, Clinton, IL, Wounded Warrior Project, or the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
