Everett E. “Gene” Getz, 89, of Cerro Gordo passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

 

Gene was born August 7, 1927 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Cecil and Amy (Carberry) Getz. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Gene was a member of the American Legion Post #0117 in Cerro Gordo and enjoyed riding his Harley and playing pool. He married Margaret Montgomery February 27, 1946 and she preceded him in death on April 13, 1950. He then married Thelma L. Miller April 12, 1952 and she preceded him in death on July 6, 1998.

 

Surviving is his son Jimmy Getz and wife Julia and brother Larry H. Jacobs and wife Sandy.

 

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, brothers Coney Edward Getz and Gary Lee Jacobs, and sister Carol Sue Miller.

 

The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Moweaqua Nursing Home, Safe Haven Hospice, DMH Hospice, and the 4th floor at DMH for all of their loving care.

 

Graveside services with military honors to celebrate Gene’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 23, 2017 in Graceland Cemetery.
