Albert A. 'Al' Vermillion

Albert A. “Al” Vermillion, 92, of Clinton, passed away at 7:29 p.m. Friday (Dec. 16, 2016), at Warner Hospital & Health Services, Clinton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with the Rev. Stephen Killion officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery, Clinton, with military honors. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Clinton Eagles or Clinton United Methodist Church.

 

Al was born July 7, 1924, in Clinton, the son of Herbert A. and Jennie Mae Hubler Vermillion. He married Donna L. Johnson on Jan. 4, 1953, in Clinton. She passed away on March 1, 2005.

Survivors include his daughters, Mikki (Jim) Burns, Clinton; Barbara (Harlan) Powers, Clinton; Sara Williamson, Richardson, Texas; and Diana (John) Leach, Maroa; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and special nephew, Dick (Linda Schmid) Wagers, Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

 

Al was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church, the Eagles, Elks and the American Legion. He was a past member of the Clinton Country Club. Al owned and operated the Vermillion Bowl and Grill, which he built in 1959, before retiring in 1989.

He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, stationed in Hawaii. He took the Honor Flight on Nov. 10-11, 2012, and was chosen to put a wreath on the Marine Corps Memorial.

Al could be seen sporting his red pants on Friday nights, and he enjoyed driving his 1985 Oldsmobile station wagon that he nicknamed “Flivver.” He was a lifelong, die-hard Cubs fan.
