James Williams

 James W. Williams, 87, of Monticello passed away at 9:35 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Celebration of Life services with Military Rites will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the Sullivan American Legion at 8 East Strain, Sullivan. Arrangements were made by McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan.

 

He was born June 18, 1928, the son of Royal C. and Marie (Rentfro) Williams on his grandparents farm near Stewardson. During his lifetime he lived in Decatur, Bement, Sullivan, Atwood and Monticello. He joined the Army at the end of World War II and passed through Hiroshima and Nagasaki on his way to battle in Korea.

 

Jim retired from the postal service after 34 years, including many years on the railroad when the mail was picked up in towns and sorted during trips throughout the state and midwest. He later owned and operated the Bement Bowl during the 60s, 70s and early 80s. Jim was an avid fisherman throughout his lifetime and for many years wintered in Florida where he saltwater fished nearly every day.

 

Jim was past commander of the Sullivan American Legion and a life-long Cub fan. Despite his 87 years, he was never able to enjoy a Cubs World Series.

 

He is survived by his wife Ruth and his five children: Dan (Judy) Williams of Petersburg, Tommy (Dawna) Williams of Cerro Gordo, Tina (Andy) Bolsen of Lovington, Jody (Steve) Shonkwiler of Bement and Jamie Williams of Chatham. He is also survived by his 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and his sister, Onda (Wade) Gregory.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Royal & Marie Williams, an infant son, his son, James (Jimmy) Williams, and brothers Ted and Darrell.

 

Memorials may be made to the Sullivan American Legion.
