Irene Wey of Heyworth

Irene M. Wey, 81, rural Heyworth, passed away at 7:18 p.m. Monday (Dec. 9, 2013) at her home with her family at her side.

She was born July 14, 1932, in Cruger, the daughter of John J. and Nora Byrd Schieber. They preceded her in death.

She was the beloved wife of 60 years of Donald E. Wey, Heyworth, who she married Feb. 14, 1954; loving mother of Jeffrey E. Wey, Plainfield, and Jeanette I. (Jeffrey) Wissmiller, Heyworth; dear sister of Lorraine (Brice) Hallam, Macon; Robert (the late Joann) Schieber, Eureka; and the late John F. (Jane) Schieber, Eureka; and fond aunt of eight nieces and nephews.

Irene graduated from the Mennonite School of Nursing, Class of 1953, as a registered nurse. She worked at Mennonite Hospital and BroMenn Regional Medical Center, retiring after a long career; but, she continued to share her knowledge of nursing for many years to follow. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, having pieced together a number of quilts. She also enjoyed stamp collecting, coin collecting, camping and in later years helping her daughter at her dance studio. She was an active member of Heyworth Christian Church, Hands All Around Quilt Guild of Central Illinois, Hey Quilters and Sack n Sew.

For those who would like to leave a lasting tribute to Irene’s life, memorials to Heyworth Christian Church or ISU Mennonite College of Nursing would be appreciated.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Heyworth Christian Church, Heyworth. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heyworth Christian Church. The Rev. Vernon Oakley and the Rev. Jerry Dusenberry will officiate. Interment will follow at Randolph Township Cemetery, Heyworth. Arrangements were entrusted to Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Heyworth.
